Well we have been hit now, two confirmed cases in Scotland. Don't panic Gordon I'm on my way to save you.

Seriously are you worried this could get bad or just getting on with your life? I myself am just getting on with it.

we´ll see the real figures in a couple of days I guess. I have been a bit confused again with the numbers going up and down daily. It´s good to be prepared anyway.

Will this cause a panic then slowly die out like the bird flu?

Might as well nuke Liverpool right now. It'll exterminate the Swine Flu Epidemic.:rolleyes:

Apparently it started in Mexico...all US cases are people who were recently there.

My question is...who did what to a pig to contract Swine Flu?

This will make you laugh, according to a phone caller to a radio station the N.H.S will save us all.

My question is this, who is going to save our N.H.S? ;)

    Cheers Richard. :p
Nah, I treat this with exactly the same amount of contempt as SARS, MRSA, AIDS, Bird 'Flu, the Millennium Bug, "Passive smoking", MMGW.......;)

Whilst you may think it's funny I suggest you may change you mind when you have a friend or relative that has HIV or dies from Aids.

Trust me it's not funny at all.

It turns out that a great number of "flu" pandemics are of trans-species origin. And that makes them even more virulent as they can jump species. From birds to swine, from swine to human, or bird to human, these are the nasty virus types. Even the famous 1918-19 influenza may quite likely have been a porcine (swine) based influenza type.

    See:

1918 Influenza Pandemic | CDC EID

The newest variety is quite similar to the 1918 version in that normally those who secumb to "flu" are the extremely young, or old, or weakened victims. This one, and the 1918 type both strike the usually healthy cross-section. Young to mid-aged. Don't make light of this guys, with the speed of today's transportation it could get world-wide in a heartbeat.

The 1918 version killed more people than WW1 itself, and while the total numbers aren't writ in stone, the "flu" deaths exceeded 50 million and may have touched 100 million due to lack of correct cause of death being reported.

Here's a link to an interesting article about flu deaths in the US that was published last year. I'm excerpting some statements that struck me.

    Science-Based Medicine » Influenza Deaths

My own general feeling is one of concern, but I refuse to panic. I'm waiting to see what the next few days bring, but I'm sure the media will be full of strident voices with all sorts of dire warnings. The reality probably is that an average number of people in the US will contract it, but with the availability of drugs like Tamoxifen, we will see only a relatively small number of deaths. Like many other illnesses, the brunt of the problem will be with the poor, the uninsured, and the elderly. Sad, but I think almost unavoidable.

I can guarantee it won't happen to anyone in my kin/social group. And I'm still not interested in scaremongering BS from "experts". The confirmed cases in Scotland are less than 20 miles from me. Will I sleep tonight? Like a log.

Most flu viruses mutate in to less damaging forms, fortunatly, but it's like a killer comet or Mount Renee blowing its top, one day statistically it will happen but there is no point panicing about it.

Here's a book on the 1918 flu outbreak that is heart-breaking and frightening at the same time. I read it a few years ago.

"The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Greatest Plague in History; By John M. Barry

It focuses on the impact of the flu on military bases.
One I have not read, but is more focused on the scientific investigation is
Flu : The Story Of The Great Influenza Pandemic by Gina Kolata
