Top Secret Red Hill facility...

    Here is a wonderful "now it can be told" story from November of 1948. The Red Hill facility was so top secret that it was never mentioned by anyone in the US military throughout the war. It was begun in late 1940, a year before Pearl was attacked because the Navy understood that the oil tanks above ground were TOO vulnerable. It was completed by 1943 and its twenty tanks could contain 4 million barrels (not gallons), and most of the oil sent to the Pearl Harbor facility went to the Red Hill tanks directly from the mainland tankers.

    I remember reading somewhere else that the land was "donated" to the government by the Roebling (sp?) family of Brooklyn Bridge and steel wire cable fame.
