Hey guys! I was looking on theses forums and I couldnt find the topic but have any of you guys ever heard of Albert Battel? This guy was a hero! Why does no one talk about him? Him and his superior (dont remember his name) saved a hundred Jews lives and even almost fired on the SS forces trying to round up the Jews, what do you guys think?
I'm Sure Many on WWII Forums know who Dr. Albert Battel is, trained as a lawyer. In the 1930s, when he was already over 40 years old, he joined the Nazi Party. Even after he became a party member, the Nazi hierarchy was suspicious of him because he seemed to sympathize with Jewish victims of the regime. As a German Wehrmacht army officer and lawyer recognized for his resistance during World War II to the Nazi plans for the 1942 liquidation of the PrzemyĆl Jewish ghetto. In 1942 as a lieutenant, already in his fifties, he was stationed in the Polish town of Przemysl, where he supervised several hundred Jewish armament workers. On Saturday, July 25, 1942, one of his workers informed him that all Jews in the ghetto of Przemysl were to be transported to Treblinka the following Monday. Battel's workers were to be among the deportees. This is the first I'm hearing of the man, thanks for sharing! It's still a shame he was only recognized as a hero posthumous and lived his last moments as "just another Nazi". Few things though, if Battel was a Nazi (member of the Nazi party) how was he able to join the Wehrmacht in 42? Were there not laws in place forbidding membership of a political party and being a soldier in the Wehrmacht up until 43/44? Any figures on the number of soldiers that went with Battel? Why weren't Battel and the soldiers arrested immedietly after this? What happened to the Jews Battel escorted out of the camps? Did any of the S.S. forces fight Battel and his men? When he recieved the men under his duty, did he tell his superiors the truth or did he make something up?
My pleasure PizzaDevil, a very interesting Story indeed, it goes to show throughout all the madness some sense of compassion can flourish, There are many other cases of Germans Officers and Soldiers. Like the Thread we had on the Rabbi saying good Morning, The Officer saved him from the Gas Chamber. This goes to show you can't Paint all Natzi's or German Army Soldiers with the same brush, But many others you can.
First thank you for the Salute it's Appreciated, Second you got to be ESing Moi You did not know?? Nobody New his true intentions, I'm moving them to another Camp he deceived many. I heard he only intrusted certain Soldiers, by the time it was all done it was to late, Well Himmler I believe wanted his head, when he met with Hitler. I don't know all the details just what I found on those links, I would have to search theres Many sites on this Check Google?? I just checked Not much can be found on him. I saw A book on Him I think???
I haven't heard of him before and judging by the amount of information on the net I don't think many have either. A lot of the sites seem to be repeating the same information, the Jews were placed under the protection of the Wehrmacht but what does that mean?
I found out about him years ago in an article, Not until Gerg mentioned it did I remember again, Yes just like on many other WWII Info many sites recycling the same Information. The Info as you can see is scarce, Something that is worthy of mention, Many Jews would of died if it wasn't for his sacrifices, I fined it quite an interesting Story, the Shame is he died forgotten.
This link says the number is around 100 The Righteous Among the Nations One of these days I'll get off my a** and finally create the site I've always wanted to so I can catalog a lot of this stuff while we still have time!
