I consider myself center left or right because I see it has a happy median between left and right.

That makes you, like many people, a moderate. Far left and far right are both equally bad.

i love a debate against a far left and far right person. always ends up in yelling :D

say, small question. is it democratic to exclude a far right party out of the parlement?
here in belgium we have a far right party telling that flanders should be independent (meaning that belgium has to split). so, everybody exclude that party. however. that far right party represends 25% of the voters in flanders (about 1 million people). and yet, every politician says that those voters are idiots, the lowest of society, treu scum, they should be ashamed to live, there facist, the love hitler, there nazi's,........
anyway, is this democratic? isn't democracy that every person gets represented in parlement by a party that fits with him? aren't we not free to choose who we want to see ruling over belgium, even if that means that belgium might be splited for a independent flanders?
i'm only asking because they are trying to bring that party to court and have it condamed for racism (by laws who had to be made espacially for this process) and take away the representation of 1 million people. is this democratic?

    No it's not.

Complete democracy is simply not possible, it would turn into anarchy rather quickly.

Perhaps you should have included an other selection. I'm not sure my political views could fit any of the selections listed. Leftist alway label me as far right because I'm somewhat of an ultra-Capitalist however I'm not at all into some things that many people conside as far right such as religion or censorship.
Libertarian/Randian Objectivist would come closest :)

Grieg - there is a theory that politics is not as simple as left & right, because, exactly as you say, your views on economics might be a bit lefty, and your views on other policy might be extremely right-wing (ok, so I changed it a bit from your example!).

(there is a website somewhere where you can do a little quiz and find out what you are, but I can't find the address... )

I'm left-from-center just like I posted in the poll, but the quiz is flawed because it does not distinguish between Liberal left and Socialist left, between which the distinction is or should be about as wide as the distance between the Earth and the Sun. When you're a Social Democrat like me, you'll find yourself ending up in an I-can't-choose position between "Liberal Left" and "Statist".

It seems to me that "the left" and "the right" don't really exist as absolutes, either, because what is considered politically rightist cannot be mixed with what is considered economically rightist simply because one advocates rigid control where the other emphasizes the absence of regulation. Same goes for leftist but the other way around.

Quillin: Vlaams Belang disagrees with the Belgian constitution, which I believe is considered enough to exclude the party from the political system. I don't agree with this because it makes it impossible to change the constitution in a democratic way, but that's how it is.

The political spectrum is gneralized , like there are many parties that would fit in 1 part of the spectrum. For example, libertarians and american conservatives can be considered right , even though their 2 different parties.

It depends which country you're in. My views spread around a lot depending on the issue but on average I'm middle-of-the-road - for the UK. That makes me some way to the left by US standards!

Not true, at least not as cut and dried as you state.

A simple left/right linear political spectrum does not suffice when one considers political philosophies beyond the traditional distinctions.
On the Nolan chart, the Political Compass chart the Pournelle chart or the Friesian Institute proposal Libertarians are not considered to be right wing, especially since in these charts there is no simple left wing, right wing distinction. There is a discussion on Wikapedia under political spectrum if you want to learn more.
