Hyah, people. I've found you during a web wide search. You may be just the experts in the feild I need. I hope you'll find this as intriguing as I?

Friend of mine, Austrian guy, late forties, has a few effects of his Uncles. These include a hand written note indicating he is at or approaching a Russian town or village. He fell there.

He, as an Austrian, spells the name of the place, as he has heard it, thus:

    " MITJIKOWO ".

East of Smolensk. Sept 3, 1941. He was with the 38th Infantry.

My friend has tried for four years. I've been at it four hours. Russian towns changed name, after the war, as you'd know. Of course, all the maps are written in Russian Krylic too. But I feel I may have pinned it down to about the area between DOROGOBUZH and YARTSEVO.

If it's any help, it should also be East of the VOLOKOLAMSK Highway - which I see German Troops were occupied with slightly later than the date of his death

There ye go. I do hope you don't mind me bounding into your Forum, with a one off? Where I specialise, we'd consider this a great oppertunity to strut our stuff and crack it! ;)

Come on, lads: Al Stewart? Roads to Moscow ? Fantastic track! Tonight I even found out who General Guderian was! :D See? I have been trying [IMG]

Welcome to the Forums Sat. S!
Ahh a puzzle for those uf us on the Forums eh? Well I can't say I'd be much help, I'm more of a WWII computer gamer, but there are a few very bright bulbs here. I don't know for sure if they can help, but I think someone might be able to shed a *little* light on the issue.

Welcome to the forums Sat Here. This is quite a hard question. But like Peppy said there are some very smart people about these forums [IMG] . I hope you find these forums as fun as I have.

    Hello Sat!

I´ll do my best...First I think we´ll have to see the place and maybe my mother or father can help with the language ( town name for Russian maps )
    problem.

Should we put the main effort on Smolensk area as I think that by 3rd Sept they could not have been to Volokolamsk? Or am I missing something here?

    ;)

Hyah, Kai - Petri. Sorry I've been so long. I got bogged down in other stuff and contact with my mate is sporadic.

It seems he's answered his own question! At least the one he raised with me. Name of place. It is, as I suspected, something very much like " Michikovo ". Sadly, he told me this on IMS, rather than E Mail and I kept no copy of the conversation.

I think the difficulty lay in his own Austrian accent, as it were? I'm sure I mangle the pronunciation as much as the spelling. I suspect he did the same, in his own way and couldn't satisfy himself on the match.

Anyway, I though that was great and wrapped things up. Heh. Not a bit of it! LOL! Bugger's trying to find where he's Buried , of course! I know, lads...I too feel this is a job for the beurochrats. Filing Clerks job. Not a Militarists.

Just wanted to thank you all for your warm welcome and good wishes. So, Thanks. From both of us ;)

    Sat Here.
