Hi Everyone! Here is my first topic on this forum and I hope you will find it interesting. I think that there is no use to tell again how important was the role of women in the second world war (mainly as civilians, but also as military), however I don't find a lot of films about female military, they are mainly nurses and have always a supporting role. I would like to know if you could tell me some films where female soldiers have an important role (The nationality of the army is not important, but of course no Nazi propaganda movies). In order to give you an idea, I watched lastly the movie: "purple sunset", and I found this film really great. There is no super-heroes, It is realistic, there is quite a subjective view of the pacific war, .... In this film one of the main character is also a female soviet soldier, what is quite original. If you didn't watch this film, I think you should. There isn't a lot of action but it isn't boring at all. You can see the teaser here: Purple Sunset Trailer I also saw the French film:"Les Femmes de l'ombre", that was quite interesting too and "Ennemy at the Gates" (but the woman has here a supporting role). Thank you in advance for your advices and I hope that this theme wasn't mentioned before in this forum.
I can think of a few such as: Mrs Miniver-well shes a Civvy but still a nice and promanently Female done movie. Another I can think of really aint female soldiers but does have to do with females which is: Kapo-and thats a European made movie back in the 1950s and is an excellent one.
here is one of my favorite films with the main role of a female. Sophie Scholl - the final days. it's a German film, about the true story of White rose Movement. (German Resistance movement) She was a member of the resistance captured by the gestapo, the movie is about her last days, and her struggles to survive. I recommend this one. highly recommended.
Take a look at; Swing Shift - war factory workers The Black Book - female resistance member Shining Through - female OSS agent You can dig around the imdb.com website in the future for your movie questions.
Shining Through is a good one. Michael Douglas and Melanie Griffth. One of the better early 90's WWII films. Shining Through (1992)
Edge of Darkness has Ann Sheridan as a Norway Resistance fighter. Also the movie called 13 Rue Madeleine with James Cagney features a major female character that is a OSS agent.
I'd recommend "Keep You Powder Dry" 1945. A large part of it was filmed on one of the actual WAC training bases at Ft. Oglethorpe, GA (also home of the U.S. 6th Cavalry). IIRC, I think the female soldiers work in motor T after their basic training. Not a bad film. Keep Your Powder Dry (1945)
