A sailfish, caught by Earl Bathol while enjoying his lifelong hobby of fishing, hangs on a wall in his Jackson Township home.

“That’s the biggest fish I ever caught — 9-feet-10-inches, 147 pounds,” said Bathol, who noted that he weighed exactly that himself when he caught it. “It was an even battle.”

Bathol weighed about that in 1944 when he was drafted by the Army for World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater and rejoined the Army early in the 1950s to serve during the Korean War.

“People ask me how I kept from getting hit,” said Bathol. “I found out that if I stood sideways I made a poor target, so I stood sideways to the front through two wars.”
