History buffs with a passion for the Second World War take it to the limit – dressing in vintage uniforms, sleeping in tents, eating rations, and even reenacting entire battles! My Wartime Wednesdays blog takes a look at two such groups in Western Canada. www.elinorflorence.com/blog/reenactors
I love these. One of my favorite WW2 veteran soldiers will not go to one with German soldier actors present. Went to one once and after making a few choice comments, promptly left. The "enemy soldiers" were quite a ways from him at the time. He was asked, "How do you know they are Germans?" Response, "I can smell them from hear. Dirty Krauts. No respect for life. Kill them all. You can't change em." Aside from that, he's honestly one of the nicest gentleman I've ever met. At his first viewing of Saving Private Ryan at a theater, he had a similar reaction. He stood up in the theater and shouted when US solders began to eliminate enemy soldiers off the beach. "Shoot the bastards!". His wife promptly pulled him into his seat.
Nice article. I went to a re-enactment a few years ago. In addition to the soldiers, there was also a canteen and dancing to period tunes. It's coming up again at the end of this month. I might go again.
