Hello guys, Long time no see. I had been pushing for this a bit of a time back, considering we have so many threads with priceless information, but all too spread out, and the underoptimized SE, (which unless you know how wont return what you want in the first page) leading to a sort of decentralization of the knowledge out here in the forums. why cant we have a wiki, where all the good threads can be refined and put in, and from which any one can access and read (but not edit AKA closed wiki) It will consolidate our knowledge greatly, wikimedia's search tables are much better and hence it'll greatly help in avoiding double posts, and we will also turn into a knowledge hub AND a discussion forums. your opinions please. Regards, TBA EDIT: Before anyone links me to wikipedia, i'd like to emphasize the fact that the wiki will be a bit different as first of all, it'll be closed (unlike wikipedia which anyone can edit), and secondly it'll be purely ww2, and the best part is we can link back to wikipedia if needed.
sounds interesting, but if editing is limited, how long will it take to get a full dataset? isnt it just easier to update or add wikipedia pages as needed?
The result is that the wikipedia becomes more and more unreliable, and more prone to mistakes (much more pronounced in history), unless allowed to be checked. We can quote wikipedia ofcourse, but it is more of a guarentee that the info provided is right It'll take time, but with majority of the members contributing good stuff, it should be up and running pretty good Regards, TBA
That's the kicker, contributors. You're talking about the biggest war on the planet, and documenting it won't be easy.
Maybe a 'sponsor/moderate a page' system could be useful (not necessarily financially) - just allow anyone with a 'pet' subject to manage it's page. hard then to be sure though that any info is any better than wikipedias. only way to ensure general acceptance and accuracy of ideas posted is to allow anyone to add to the pages, although some sort of 'vote for/against accuracy of statement' and 'vote for/against amendment' system might be worthwhile eventually. There's also the big problem of intellectual property. While it would be a wonderful thing to have all original material about ww2 in one place, a lot of people don't like to share and too much would be missing to make any great advance over wikipedia as is.
There is this little thing on IP management, where you can quote and link back to the main author's page like wikipedia (scroll all the way down, you'll know what i mean) Regards, TBA
That would be a fast way to flesh it out. I haven't looked at the Wiki page on the Pearl Harbor attack lately, I should get over there.
