It wasn't Geoffrey Wellum apparently. "The youngest pilot to fly in the Battle of Britain has finally been revealed as a teenager who died after bailing out of his Hurricane after being shot down over Southampton. Martyn Aurel King, 18, has been confirmed as the youngest of 'The Few' after his birth certificate was found and confirmed his date of birth as October 15, 1921. It was previously thought he was 19 due to an error in his official records, with the incorrect age even carved onto his gravestone in Hampshire. The discovery ends a long-running debate over the identity of the youngest RAF pilot in the conflict, with historians previously believing it was Alexander Appleford, who was born almost a month before Mr King. Author and former Spitfire pilot Geoffrey Wellum has also been credited as the youngest to take part in the Battle of Britain, but he was born on August 4, 1921 so is several weeks older. Mr King was born in Essex but grew up in China, where his father Dr George King was a medical missionary before his death from drowning in 1927. He attended the Chefoo school in northern China and was active in rowing and football, before returning to the UK in 1938. A year later he joined up with the RAF and after completing his training was posted to RAF Leconfield in East Yorkshire in June 1940 as a Hurricane pilot. But on August 16 he was shot down while fighting the Luftwaffe over Southampton. Mr King was able to jump out of the fighter but his parachute was then torn by enemy fire, causing him to fall to his death. The discovery was made by historian Geoff Simpson while researching the lives of pilots for the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust website." www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6158955/The-18-year-old-killed-Battle-Britain.html
