Greetings and Salutations to those of you who sustain a healthy interest in all things WW II. Just 2 years ago my brother located a copy of our father's WW II, WD AGO 53-55 Enlisted Service Record, equivilant of the modern DD-214, at the Indiana State Library Archive where he had to produce a copy of it for the "Lifetime Hunting/Fishing Stamp" and post discharge bonus for 3 years of wartime service. He died in 1961, when I was 2 years old, while he was in the Indy VA hospital after contracting a staph infection while having corrective surgery for wounds recieved in Belgium Jan 1945. The only unit history indentification features listed were reference to the unit that he was assigned to when he was awarded the Purple Heart w/1 oak leaf cluster HQ Co 2nd Btn 517 PIR for wounds recieved on the 7th and 14th of Jan 1945, and that at the time f his discharge he was assigned to the HQ Co 2nd Btn 513 PIR/17th Airborne Div and the 5 campaigns he was in, Naples/Foggia, Rome/Arno, Ardennes/Alsace, Rhineland and Central Europe with 1 Invasion Arrowhead for participation in the airborne invasion of Germany in Operation Varsity. I have found much info on his participation in WW II since then but not much on his brother/my uncle who served with the 566th Signal Air Warning Battalion only that he too was credited for 5 campaigns, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes/Alsace, Rhineland and Central Europe. So, I hope to become a helpful and apreciated member of your forum. Dannie Perry, US Army, Sgt. E-5, Hvy self-propelled field artilery mechanic, 1980-87, trained in Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri, Ft. Sill Oklahoma, and was stationed at Ft. Hood Texas, W.O. Darby Kasern Nuremburg Germany and Ft. Knox Kentucky. I hope to learn as much as possible about my father and uncle's participation for historical and geaneologly for my sons and grandsons.

Welcome Dannie. We're a pretty friendly lot, so feel free to join in.
I found this bit about the 566th on another site:
The 566th Signal Aircraft Warning Bn was active between
10 Oct 42 and 31 Oct 45 (I have not been able to confirm either of these as the activation or inactivation dates for the unit) It was stationed at
Drew Fld, FL to 21 Oct 42, Plant Fld, FL to 13 Nov 42, Drew Fld, FL to 16 May 43, Lake Thonotosasa, FL to 19 Aug 43, West Palm Beach, FL (Morrison Fld?) to 10 Sep 43, Egypt Lake FL to 11 Oct 43, Forest Hills, FL to 20 Oct 43, Drew Fld, FL to 2 Dec 43, Camp Shanks, NY to 9 Dec 43, RAF Chapel Row to 9 Mar 44, RAF Ibsley, England to 17 Mar 44, RAF Andover, England to 28 Jun 44, Applesbow, England to 7 Jul 44, Riveterre, France to 11 Jul 44, Trevieres, France to 25 Jul 44, Le Vast, France to 17 Aug 44, Rennes, France to 8 Sep 44, Victor, France to 18 Sep 44, Namur, Belgium to 24 Sep 44, St Hubert, France to 1 Oct 44, Verdun, France to 1 Dec 44, Vignuelles, France to 8 Dec 44, Versailles, France to 10 Dec 44, Verdun, France to 20 Dec 44, Longeville, France to 26 Dec 44, Villerupt, France to 21 Feb 45, Warden, Germany to 1 Mar 45, Luxemburg, Luxemburg to 1 Apr 45, Ellern, Germany to 10 Apr 45, Schwarzenbrau (Schwarzenborn?), Germany to 29 Apr 45, Graffenwoehr, Germany to 31 Oct(?) 1945
I have recently learned that at least 3 of the 12 Aircraft Warning & Control Groups alloted to the Air National Guard in 1946 have lineages derived from SAW Bns. I would not be surprised if the 566th's heritage was also passed down to one of these units.
As an ASWAAF (Arms & Services with the Army Air Forces) unit, collar insignia for the 566th should have been for the Signal Corps.
I think you will find that the primary radar used was probably the SCR-270.

    566 SAW, XXIX TAC, 9th AF 1944-1945

Feel free to post whatever you have and you can be sure it will be treated with great respect.
