My Grandfather Leonard Alton Stennett served in WWII and was in the Pacific Theater. I know he was in Leyte, P.I. during this time and believe he served in the 81st Infantry Wildcat Division. That's what the insignia on his uniform leads me to believe anyway. I'm very interested in learning more about this part of WWII. He never talked about his time over there. I have very few pictures and know very little about his service. I'm hoping this forum will help me to discover more about my Grandfather. I loved him dearly and he is missed by his entire family left behind.
Welcome. Post what you have, pictures, etc. and we'll do our best to help fill in the blanks. You might want to have a look at this older thread http://www.ww2f.com/topic/32876-81st-infantry-322-regimentwildcats/ Here as well http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/177-81st-infantry-division/
I know he enlisted 18 June 1942 in Louisiana. Camp Livingston I believe. I've attached some pictures I have that give some information about places he may have been. Going to the thread you sent now. Thank you!
This is the Unit Crest for the 321st Infantry regiment. Looks like he was in it. http://www.betadesigns.com/Vgrfx/pages/Military_Artwork/US_Army_Artwork/Regiments/321st-Rgmt-(BCT)-U_1.asp Great pictures.
I've never been able to see that clearly in the photos. That's incredible! The regiment he was in was what I was struggling with the most. Thank you kind sir!
I did notice that but I wasn't sure if that was his regiment or another where he happened to be. I couldn't find a roster of any kind to confirm. Now that I know for sure I will get with my mom to see if we can get service records.
She should be able to get them. Start here http://www.archives.gov/veterans/ .This is his induction record. ARMY SERIAL NUMBER 38174643 NAME STENNETT#LEONARD#A###### RESIDENCE: LOUISIANA PLACE OF ENLISTMENT CP LIVINGSTON LOUISIANA DATE OF ENLISTMENT DAY 18 MONTH 06 YEAR 42 NATIVITY LOUISIANA YEAR OF BIRTH 21 EDUCATION 1 year of high school CIVILIAN OCCUPATION 831 Unskilled sawmill occupations, n.e.c. MARITAL STATUS 6 Single, without dependents COMPONENT OF THE ARMY 7 Selectees (Enlisted Men)
The DUI in the 4th picture pretty much cinches is as to his being in the 321st. From the 2nd photo, I think it is reasonable to presume he was probably in 3rd Platoon of Company F. Since it is a posed photo, I don't think the sign being in the photo was an accident. However, as you indicated, it's better to find some corroborating evidence. Thanks for sharing those great photos. And, by the way, welcome to the Forum.
