If in fact, these five 501 Squadron Spitfires were ± the actions of this one Ju88, it may indeed be one of THE battles of the ages.
I for one, would like to see as complete a record (story) of this melee as our resources here can come up with.
    Tnx!

From the Loss Record for W3894 at http://lostaircraft.com/database.php?mode=viewentry&e=30212

Spitfire Factory: Eastleigh, Merlin 45 Engine.
During the flight on the October 9, 1941 501 Sqdn in full strength encountered a JU 88.
The bomber was destroyed, the victory was credited as collective to the squadron.
Spitfire Mk. Vb W3894 was shot down by a Ju 88 that was the sole enemy aircraft combating against a 12 aircraft melee.
One has to have a degree of sympathy for the German crew who faced twelve Spitfires lining up, time and again, to have another go!

However, five (5) Spitfires of 501 Squadron were shot down this day, April 25th 1942, all presumably in the combat with this sole Ju 88.
See: BL974 W3840 AB251 and AB179 (Links above) - all others possibly as claims recorded by Bf 109s in that area that day.
The Ju 88 was eventually shot down by the squadron.

The Ju 88 pilot Stormer and his crew didn not have a chance of escape and he too thought that this was the end.
When he came to the surface a Spitfire circled him so low that he could clearly see the pilots face.

Crew member? Meckelburg with 8/KG 51 was shot down & taken POW/released 24 May 40

The text of the ORB gives: "An exciting afternoon resulting in the squadron getting a Ju 88.
The enemy aircraft appeared to be on a recce and did not appear to be carrying bombs.
None were jettisoned. Enemy aircraft seemed to be heavily armoured but armament and camouflage were standard.
Return fire was experienced but it was not very accurate. The aircraft was slowly losing height but at high speed.
All aircraft of 501 Squadron had opened fire on the Ju 88 at ranges varying from 50ft to 400yds.

    My WW2 hero...pictured, took out 5 Stukas in one sortie...in a spitfire.
Have not ever heard of 88 kills over spitfires...(doesnt mean much though). Sounds like an awesome story...

PLEASE edit your post to add his picture. OK Chum? Tnx!

He (Storm) may have been too busy ditching to see his victim go in. From the accounts at the Luftwaffe website (above) it sounds very much like he survived to tell the story.
Hopefully, hopefully it is indeed out there. Fingers crossed.
