Friends: I am saddened to report that European fighter ace of the 56th fighter group flying the P-47 / Gabby Gabreski died of a heart attack yesterday the 31 st of January 2002 at the age of 83. A Tiger of a man for sure with a keen eye as ever with many a good yarn. I was fortunate to meet and interview him along with ace and commander Hub Zemke in Sisters Oregon in the early 90's. Another one gone, and another one sorely missed...... E
This is indeed--a VERY sad day leading to a VERY set of sad times. Gabby sure was one hell of an Eagle and will be sorely missed. Damn................
Saddened by this news. Saw him on a documentary on Pearl HArbour on thehistorychannel when I was in the States last month. Just the other day I had a book in my hands in which his exploits were described. Always sad to hear about these great guys and historic eyewitnesses passing away. We owe a lot... STevin
Stevin, on this topic--or related--dont I owe you something? if so, please send me a reminder. I totally concurr, and soem of us on thesew forums repeat time and again, that if one wants to write to these brave men--now is the time to do so.
Well, I wouldn't call it that you owe me something.... I've sent you an e-mail. Erich, got any closer in solving the PFF enigma? I recieved good and nice e-mails from mr. Alton and Jones on the matter of PFFs. Nothing specific to this day though. They did somehow gave conflicting info as to the use and #s of PFF ships in a group. Ah well, those are the joys of researching! ( Sorry, I am getting Off-topic here..) [ 03 February 2002: Message edited by: Stevin Oudshoorn ]</p>
