Here are some pictures of the fortified town of Rhodes (in the island with the same name situated in the SE Aegean) These pictures show parts of the final form of the fortifications* -- built by the Knights of St John-- during the first decade of 16th century. *The 1st and 2nd picture show the Grand Magister's Palace. However, when it was restored by the Italians during the occupation of the island(1912-end of ww2) they didn't follow much historical evidence --mostly in the interior and the result is not very accurate... Feel free to post pictures of any kind of castle or fortification of your country.
still looks like they could present a problem to would be invaders. Very impressive. I wish i lived in Britain. (T_T)
There're loads of amazing castles and forts in the UK but this one's not a particularly old or impressive one but it is the most local to me. It's Fort Perch Rock and it was built in 1829 at New Brighton facing Liverpool to guard the entrance of the river Mersey and it's still intact and open to visitors. Hey - lets have a US vs Europe castle competition - we should win that one - that big pink one in Disneyland doesn't count by the way.
The following pictures are featuring parts of the Acrocorinth castle -- the citadel of ancient Corinth. The actual fort -- on top of a 500m high hill -- was used by the ancient times to the early 19th century. The visitor can see clearly the different forms of architecture on the walls(starting from bottom to top).
Some more that couldn't be posted previously. The second picture is taken from the highest (out of the two) peaks of the hill and shows a french castle built on the hill roughly around 1220...
Some other castles/fortresses I have visited: Fort Boyard, build tpo protect the arsenal of Rochefort sur Mer. Started under Napoleon the first, it only was finished in the early 1850's:
Fort Carre in Antibes: Build in the 14th century, later improved by Vauban. It saw combat against the Royal Navy in 1797-98. Napoleon was imprisoned here for some time after the fall of Robespierre in 1794:
I know a man that used to own a castle in Poland but he sold it because it cost too much to maintain. I have a picture that was taken in mid 90s but I dont have a scanner.
I'm very concerned that our American buddies may feel left out by this one so here's one of theirs' that I tracked down - apparently it's in Anaheim -
There's some awesome castles on here - inculding my favourite, the castle of Bouillon! It must be said though, that at the time Godefroy of Bouillon still lived there it was little more than a tower, a hall and a pallissade. Most of the castle as it looks now was constructed under supervision of Louis XIV in the seventeenth century.
