I ask you, since when did the O.G.P.U. or the N.K.V.D. permit detainees to keep a diary whilst on remand for crimes against the state? Much less allow any contact with the outside world whilst in custody?

This is exactly the scenario you are espousing, a highly unlikely scenario. People detained and imprisoned by the Purges lost contact with the outside world. It was highly unusual for them to be allowed to complete any kind of 'manifesto'. Lets us SEE the details of this diary....so far we have more proof to substantiate Conquest's theory than anything else.

If the diary is all that the state of Russia has to 'clear' the name of I.V. Stalin from involvement, then it must be said that their case is incomplete. I personally feel vry insulted at having to swallow such a big lie. But, it is just another of the 'big lies' that we in the west have had to put up with from certain sections of the ruling elite in Russia.

I say, that if you want to make a hero of Josef Stalin, do so somewhere else where other more impressionable ears will listen and nod. People have no tolerance here for glorification of Hitler, so in the same vien, we should have zero tolerance for Russians wishing to glorify the Maximum Leader.

The end result of the Russian State in no way justifies the means to which that point was reached by. The Bolshevik Government highjacked a popular revolution of the people, and stayed in power not through popular approval, but through a programme of arrests, imprisonments, exiles and executions of ANYONE who got in their way.

AND...just for the record....Sergai Kirov posed no 'threat' to Stalin, as you claim. He was a MODERATE, and was on his way to Moscow before Stalin derailled that particular opointment.

What is ironic is that the 'threat' to Stalin existed ONLY in the mind of the Leader himself...

"Stalin's original plan involved replacing Philip Medved, the head of the Leningrad NKVD, by his own crony E.G. Evdokimov, the old Secret Policeman of Shakhty fame, who was on cool terms with the rest of the NKVD officers. However, this transfer was blocked by Kirov, who protested against such moves being made without the permission of the Leningrad Provincial Committee, and it had to be countermanded."
    Stalin could only approach YAGODA...."

Having been checked in one way, Stalin was determined to rid Leningrad of it's unbearably popular leader, once and for all...

Volga, you may swallow anything that you want, but just because you dont like the evidence presented does not mean that its not legitimate. Again, this diary has been examined by a number of authors and historians alike all who have changed their view in light of this evidence. Have you examined this diary? Aside from that it is "Russian", on what basis are you simply discrediting the proof presented which many others who have spent much time actually researching it state otherwise? What is it that you know or possess which a number authors and historians around the world do not?

Who said anything about allowing him to keep a diary while in detention?!?!

Is this a serious post or are you just simply making stuff up to convince yourself?!

    I AM GLORIFYING STALIN?!?!

This is what I posted above:

"I have never nor will I ever try to either deny, defend or excuse the purges caused by Stalin. The purges were crimes against all Soviet people and will remain as such regardless of what evidence is presented regarding Kirov's death. The debate here which I was involved in regarded Stalin's involvement in Kirov's murder not the purges. As far as I am concerned Stalin would have gone along with the purges or something resembling them regardless of Kirov's fate... IMO, Kirov's murder conveniently gave Stalin a reason to proceed with the crimes which by no means excuse him of the guilt but dont necessarily mean he was involved in the assassination either. The newly presented evidence seem to show the exact same thing.

I believe it is very easy for people to accept Stalin's involvment in the murder of Kirov, afterall; he was only one man and Stalin had killed millions. Whats ironic, is that this evidence shows that out of all the people that the paranoid Soviet leader killed, he had nothing to do with the murder of a man who possed the biggest threat to him and should have killed first..."

Where in my post do you see me glorifying Stalin?

Volga you really need to read my posts more carefully. I am NOT claiming that Kirov was a threat to Stalin, Im claiming that Stalin might have very well considered him to be a threat, as Kirov was very popular and did not align himself with Stalin's ultimate view! Stalin was paranoid, many who perished in the purges were threats as far as he was concerned. He sent Zhukov away for the same reason!

What I wrote Volga was that ironically the very man (Kirov) who possed more of a threat to Stalin than possibly anyone else who Stalin murdered , didnt die by Stalin's hand (or so the evidence states).
