Probably just a matter of 20-20 hindsight.? But.....did The Allies think they would be able to occupy Dieppe, and Do/Destroy whatever the plan was, and then still be able to get the men back to England... or was this maybe (even if successful) a "one way" mission.? I assume most Tanks/Heavy Equipment were never coming back..... Thank You
I suggest you read through this thread http://www.ww2f.com/topic/4825-dieppe/?hl=dieppe It is fairly old and some of the links no longer work, but it gives a great deal of information and insight on the Dieppe invasion.
I am a Canadian. I have been to Dieppe. I have visited the cemetery. I do not think there was a plan other than to harass the enemy and to depart. Reminder that this fiasco took place in 19th August, 1942; almost 2 years before 6th June, 1944.
