I know you are anxious to fight the French, but to contemplate starting a world war is over-doing it a bit, don't you think?

In due course. What is required first is a big power suffering from political instability or economic problems, and the forming of some offensive alliance or other. Arguably this is already in place, but not as directly, openly and agressively as what I mean. There will always be wars, and potentially world wars, as long as anyone thinks there's anything to gain from it.

What I don't believe, however, is that any human being will ever have the guts to start nuclear war, because everyone is very well aware of what that will mean.

I would agree with you Roel. I mayhate the French but I never said I would kill them. I think there will always be wars , but I think the next major war will between Russia and China over resources.

Tunic. You have yet to give a single good reason for why you apparently hate the French. As you have ignored previous questions when you have posted xenophobic comments let me ask again.

When was the last time you visited France, Britain or even Europe?

How many Frenchmen or women have you actually met?

I am guessing the answer is never and none because when I have asked you this in the past you have ignored it and failed to respond.

Why then do you feel in a position to post such biggotted, xenophobic and racist comments like "I hate the French" when you have yet to indicate that you have actually met a Frenchman and been able to form your own opinion?

Just so that the Forum can put your world views into context, have you ever even left Arkansas and met any of the people you seem so eagre to pass judgement on?

I've been to France, and met some French people. I was even able to communicate with them, in a sort of broken way. You should have seen them wincing as I butchered their language.

Anyway, while I admit to having somewhat less than great respect for the French government, there's nothing wrong with the French people!

And my generation only lived in fear of nuclear annihilation.
Tunic, what resources would the Russians and Chinese fight over? Any statistics? Or is this another "use your imagination thread"?

I don't see a Chinese-Russian war as very likely, unless it's fought with nuclear weapons. Russia's army is in such poor condition that the invasion of Chechnya required the army's entire strength, despite its impressive size on paper. China's army would be far superior. I fail to see what China would gain from an invasion, though - the part of Russia sharing borders with China isn't exactly of vital importance, and a prolonged Chinese campaign would not be likely, due to international pressure, and the trade embargos and blocades which would comeinto effect.

I think that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan is far more likely. Although the Taiwanese army would be able to offer some resistance, they would be incapable of holding out forever.

A less likely scenario would be a Chinese invasion of Japan. Because of the US and in turn NATO backing of Japan, this would be the war which would be most likely to escalate into nuclear warfare and an all-out warwith China.

In the end, however, China is becoming increasingly dependant on western industries, and their political leaders are softening up.

How about a war between the PRC and the US over natural resources - primarily petrol. In that scenario, it would be at least possible that Russia might ally itself with either country. I think there would be more advantage to them to ally with the US. I think China's goal is to become independent of Western industries. As far as the PRC leadership softening - maybe but I wouldn't give odds. And, of course, as already pointed out, the PRC might invade Taiwan. What will the US do, I wonder, if that happens?

Arguably they've already had reforms in China of a similar nature as those made by Gorbachev.

In the end I don't think a "Chinese Gorbachev" would have the same effect on China as it had on Russia and the SSSR, either. The Soviet Union was weak, internally divided and bankrupt, even though it didn't show this on the outside; economic decline there has been a constant since the fall of Communism. China on the other hand is continuously becoming stronger and richer, and therefore it is much more likely to become agressive at some point or other, convinced as they are sure to become of their own potential.

Nuclear Weapons makes wars too terrible to wage.

Yes, hence why wars will be fought without using them.

Does anyone on here believe that nuclear weapons have any preventive power at all? I think history proves conclusively that nations with nuclear weapons aren't eager to use them yet do not shy from going to war.

yes, there would be no war, just the destruction of the earth. too many places have nuclear and bio weapons now, and many countries would be willing to use them, bombing the U.S. first, probably.

What country would use nukes? How about a terrorist country? What about a scenario in which Iran, whose leader has said that Israel should not exist, tests a nuclear weapon, or there is incontrovertible evidence that Iran has nukes. Would Israel (or the US) launch a pre-emptive strike? Or, to return to the PRC issue, would the US use nukes if the PRC invaded Taiwan and we knew that they had no nuclear retaliatory capability. Don't give too much credit to countries buying into the "nukes are too terrible to use" thesis. If a country's basic national interests are at stake - well! I have no idea what US military doctrine is today, but during the 1960's in Europe there was a pretty explicit understanding that the US would use tactical nukes if the Sovs came across the border.

Theres no question in my mind nuclear weapons will be used again. With each country that developes them the higher the chances they will be used once more. Especially countries like Iran or North Korea. Places that have leaders that dont need to answer to anyone.

And the naked ape is pretty good at killing on a mass scale using machetes, guns, knives...ect

Then there is a question of "accidental war". The Americans and Russians almost came to it a few times. Luckily there was enough distance between us we could figure out they were false alarms. But whats the distance between India and Pakistan? India and China? Iran and Israel? Its also a mistake to assume newer members of the club have the same level of command, control, and security, of their nuclear weapons as we in the west do. Its really a quite frightening situation.

The Iran situation is even more frightening because the place is being ran by religious fanatics. They have vowed to destroy Israel and kill all the Jews. To make it worse they are developing a sophisticated IRBM whcih they will shortly be able to arm with nuclear weapons. Israel, for security and geographical reasons only bases two legs of their triad at a few bases only. Which makes them an inviting first strike target.

If we dont get ahold of this nuclear weapons and WMDs thing now I'd call it "highly likely" they will be used again.

    Thank you.........Rich

So far the countries that are likely to ever want to start nuclear war have fewer nukes than their most likely targets. Therefore they will not attack using nuclear weapons. It isn't just logic dictating, it's the simple fact and knowledge that starting an attack with nukes against a nuclear power stronger than you means your country and your people will be wiped out.
