Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier has revealed Liverpool have contacted him to ask permission to speak to Didier Deschamps.

Speculation has been rife over who will take charge at Anfield since Rafael Benitez left the club at the beginning of the month, with Kenny Dalglish and Roy Hodgson among the current frontrunners.

However, Jean-Claude Dassier claims Ligue 1 winning coach Deschamps is the man Liverpool want but the OM president insists they have no chance of tempting the Ligue 1 winning coach away from Stade Velodrome.

"It's true, Liverpool's executive director, Christian Purslow, called me Thursday morning," the OM chief told L'Equipe. "He speaks French very well, is very polite.

"I was expecting his call because I had heard of Liverpool's interest in Didier. He asked me if I would allow him to meet Didier and (agent) Jean-Pierre Bernes.

"I replied that I would never forbid anyone from meeting whoever.

"I also kindly indicated to him that there wasn't the slightest chance for him to pinch our coach. Even in his dreams."

Deschamps' contract runs out at the end of next season and he is yet to pen an extension.

Brazil striker Luis Fabiano has issued a come-and-get-me plea to Manchester United or AC Milan after ruling out a move to Tottenham.

The Sevilla star does not want to sign a new contract with the Spanish club and he is a target of AC Milan.

Fabiano told the Daily Star Sunday: "I have a real chance of winning a World Cup here in South Africa, and that is what I must stay focused on even though I know my future has to be sorted soon.

"I have made it clear that I will not be signing a new contract with Sevilla and at 29 I now need to join a club where I can start challenging for the highest honours from the first season.

"I have heard Tottenham Hotspur made an enquiry about me but, with all respect, that is not somewhere I am going to be able to win the Premier League or the European Cup in the next three or four years.

"There would be no point in me joining Tottenham. I might as well stay at Sevilla, as it's the same thing. Sevilla are actually bigger when you look at how much we have been in the European Cup, so there would be no point me moving to a smaller team.

"The choice will come down to Manchester United and AC Milan. That is the sort of team I want to be signing for, one of the true giants of Europe.

Germany midfielder Michael Ballack has joined Bayer Leverkusen on a two-year contract following his release by Chelsea.

The 33-year-old, who is missing the World Cup through an injury picked up in the FA Cup final victory, was released by Chelsea at the end of last season.

The midfielder is returning to the Bundesliga and his old side, with whom he reached the Champions League final in 2002

"With my transfer to Bayer Leverkusen a circle is complete. I had a beautiful and successful time here, on which I like to look back on a lot," Ballack said on his new club's official website.

Roy Hodgson will be named Liverpool manager later on Wednesday after the Reds agreed compensation with Fulham, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims the Reds have agreed a package "in the region of £2million" with the Cottagers for the 62-year-old's release.

New president Sandro Rosell has revealed the extent of Barcelona's financial worries by admitting the players' wages were not paid last month.

But Rosell explained in an interview with Sport his administration were forced to act, both with that sale and by seeking further funds from banks.

"We found a club in debt, with liquidity problems," he said. "At this point we have to take a loan to pay the wages of the players.

"The squad were supposed to be paid at the end of last month and still haven't been.

"We'll fix a loan of 150million euros."

Asked how a club with a turnover of 400million euros could be in such a predicament, Rosell said: "It has spent more than it has made."

Despite the financial situation - and the purchase of David Villa from Valencia - Rosell insists there is still as much as 89million euros to spend on new blood.

"There will be 50 million euros to sign more players," he said. "This is the case every year. This is our plan for the future.

"Technically, as of now we have 50 million plus 15 for Chygrynskiy and 24 for (Yaya) Toure. In total, 89million."
