not sure of any memorials to the fallen. when I was in Speyer we were rushed around so fast our heads were spinning, no time to even check the local Friedhof and ask where my cousins remains were moved to

think it's time to go back for further explorations, I'd still like to come to the Ardenne in the fall when the leaves are down and the winter snows have not yet arrived. The German Nachtjagd lost more in December of 44 than any month of the war, many MIA during the Bulge fiasco

There is still a lot to discover there and it's a gorgeous landscape that well deserves a holiday

    5 Viermots (all Lancs) near Magdeburg , 22.05. 22.10/ 22.15, /22.25. / 22.40/, 23.00 prob 156 sq JA 912.

Only one of his last 5 claims are identified . There is also a bibiography of the Prinz which tells about his career. As to who shot him down, there is still a mystery (several possibilites are evoked: JA 912 gunner or Mossie DZ303.)

I will ask after the first of the year some German friends that love to find the aces grave-sites for photo taking and setting flowers. Skip isn't this a Familie plot owned property or ?

IJsselstein is a German wargrave cemetery in Holland: there are famous graves there such as the Prinz zu Sayn Witgenstein (Block TH row 1 GRAVE NUMBER 2.) Paul semrau is buried there too. To be noticed: Ofw Rietscher who died the same night as the Prinz is also buried there.( BM 4 92)

I won't be going that way anytime soon. I wait till it is nice weather again to visit cemeteries. I did see grave pics of IJsselstein floating around on the net. When I will be in the neighborhood, I will let you know.

What I wanted to let the Dutch members know; Theo Boiten, author of the book(s) which are subject of this thread, is giving a lecture on 15 Jan. 2009 in Arnhem/Schaarsbergen about his book and the Night Air War. The lecture is organized by the Deelen research Group (Deelen being the former airfield just north of Arnhem).

Entrance fee is just a mere EUR 5. The lecture starts at 20.00 and you can register at www.fliegerhorstdeelen.nl

Or sent an email to excursies@fliegerhorstdeelen.nl

hey Stevin, sure pick the time when the weather is clear and blue for photo taking or if you can find pics on the net apply them here please.

are you planning on attending the lecture, that would be quite interesting... ?

one of the volumes came minutes ago by postal, the other volume maybe just days away. have been told do not open either one on the pain of Christmas retribution and physical suffering ...........

Arnhem is not around the corner. The 15th is on a thursday...and how things are at work, I doubt I will make it there. Have to be fresh and fruity on friday.

I read in the newsletter that Theo is still working on chapters about the Eastern front, the Med and SE Europe....Apparently these will be added to the second volume.

When I find the Ysselstein pics I will put them in a separate thread. I think I saw them on a site like flickr or photobucket. The cemetery is huge. With a great number of un-identified.

Did Santa utter these shameful threats? I assume he meant by physical suffering a stampede by Rudolph and his buddies....Maybe you should just beware of slippery roads during your upcoming cycle runs....

    question fro Martin/Skip

does volume 1 cover my cousin, Hans Baer's claim for a Mossie near the south of Westerwald on August 2nd/3rd, 1943. He was still with 4./NJG 3 and a surprise too what he was flying ....... it may mention this and the unit and precisely where if at all ? Also it appears that Baer and his crew in return were shot down on their landing approach by a 418th squad. Mossie 4km south of Rantum (spelling is incorrect possibly ? ) all 3 man crew wounded: map grid SC-HO-HA.

    thank you

    Erich ~

Sorry Erich ,but I couldn't find him mentionned. This is probably because the books details losses and not claims. It does not say which German crew were lost that night either. NJG3 pilots mentionned for the night are: Simon, Führer , Leube, Radusch, Krauter, and Heitmann.

funny isn't it that all the four engines by NJG 3 are accounted for but the mysterious unknown Mossie that was downed over the See is not accounted for. oh well more to search out in time hopefully

    thank you Skip ~
