Pentagon 3-day Blitz Plan for Iran

I saw this on the Drudge Report this morning...

"The Pentagon has drawn up plans for massive airstrikes against 1,200 targets in Iran, designed to annihilate the Iranians’ military capability in three days, according to a national security expert.

Alexis Debat, director of terrorism and national security at the Nixon Center, said last week that US military planners were not preparing for “pinprick strikes” against Iran’s nuclear facilities. “They’re about taking out the entire Iranian military,” he said.

Debat was speaking at a meeting organised by The National Interest, a conservative foreign policy journal. He told The Sunday Times that the US military had concluded: “Whether you go for pinprick strikes or all-out military action, the reaction from the Iranians will be the same.” It was, he added, a “very legitimate strategic calculus”.

President George Bush intensified the rhetoric against Iran last week, accusing Tehran of putting the Middle East “under the shadow of a nuclear holocaust”. He warned that the US and its allies would confront Iran “before it is too late”.

Bush is committed for now to the diplomatic route but thinks Iran is moving towards acquiring a nuclear weapon. According to one well placed source, Washington believes it would be prudent to use rapid, overwhelming force, should military action become necessary.

Israel, which has warned it will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, has made its own preparations for airstrikes and is said to be ready to attack if the Americans back down."

which is more luinatic ? sitting on our hands while tehran becomes a belicose nuclear power or pulling the rug out from under them while we still can? bear in mind the israelies have said the will do what they have to do in a pre emptive way if the dems are elected and we do the powerful hand sitting nevile thing..i dont know ...its a crappy hand either way you slice it ...

 

One point that has often been raised before. Just because you have a plan for something does not mean you will do it - or even that you particularly want to do it.

For example, before WW2 the USA had plans for an invasion of Canada. They weren't ever going to go through with them, but it it always safest to be prepared, just in case.

I'd be a little suprised if the USA didn't have a plan for invading Iran. That would just be folly, given the tensions around at the moment. It doesn't mean they will invade, just that they can do so effectively if they really need to.

 

Er, why is destroying the full Iranian military necessary?

When Saddam was up to his nuclear tricks in 81', the Israeli's destroyed the Osirak nuclear plant... (which, might I add, was actually CAPABLE of creating weapons grade plutonium, at the time)

What massive task force was assembled for this astounding feat, i hear you ask?

And certainly a bucketload cheaper in lives and in money than an all out assault, followed by a bloody un unwinnable occupation...
Seriously guys help me out, I can't think of any legitimate reason why a surgical strike wouldn't be the preferrable choice...

 

well ..theres a plan somewere , ricky ,to invade england too ...you can rest assured ..peacetime army has lottsa free time..what astounded me was that we had NO plan to deal with an interiour generated air attack ..ie 911 ..but we have a plan to invade uk and canada ..christ!..also we had NO arabic speakers on staff at cia or fbi ...NONE! make me feel so safe and secure ..our govt at work...as to iran strike ..i guess the planners figure the iranians are gonna be just a pissed if we hit just the cenrifuges ect..so wtf ..lets go the whole hog ..makes sense to me ..i think its all bluff ..gwb dont have the balls or the political capitol either..and if the dems win ..we will just give them mullas all the stuff to finish their weapons if they just really promise to be nice...and shake hands on it ,and sign in front of a notary..then we will get the israelies to scede the territoris back and demand the arabs also double ,triple swear to be nice ...and we will have peace in our time...

 

I would be fairly sure that they do have a plan to do a 'surgical' strike. They just haven't been leaked.

Could it be that they have leaked the invasion plans to distract attention away from the surgical strike, because that is what they intend to use if it becomes necessary, while at the same time making Iran realise that they are taking a very serious view of the whole thing?

Suspicion / paranoia is useful.

Sounds a lot like "Shock and Awe". Great images for on the news but the real targets will be no doubt camouflaged in the dessert and thus not be bombed since nobody can find them. And if it's not, then it will be in a couple weeks. Iran does read the American press.
I go with what Ricky says. This is just a plan for when the situation requires to act. Seeing how things end up in Iraq, i don't think the Americans are willing to fight another war in that regio.
Then again, they should have attacked Iran instead of Iraq. A country where you can only rent suicide-bomming vids and wants to build nucleair plants miles away from the cities it has to supply, can't be a friendly, peaceloving country.

Correct me if i'm wrong but distance from the cities isn't realy an issue if you have electrical cables between the power plant and the city. These cables are ussualy refferd to as Power grid.

 

...and surely it makes sense to place Nuclear power plants as far away from centres of population as possible? If something goes badly wrong, such as it infamously did at Chernobyl, a few hundred glow-in-the-dark goats are going to cause less of a problem than if a meltdown occured in the middle of a town or city.

 

Know what is funny ? Iran used to be one of Israel's strongest allies.

It would be useless to destroy their military targets, coz their whole equipment is useless, as the goverment of iran itself , you know even if they would jam the iranian communication, military infrastucture, illiminating some VIPs or whatever, there would be enough iranian idiots who think about the "evilness" of the US and that we have to fight the infidels, where we can get em, oh that´s in Iraq, we should go there with our mighty prophet mohammed blow american soldiers and iraqi civlians in a ratio of 1:6. The so called blitz on Iran would be useless and destabilize the whole middle east and furthermore it would unit the Iran and its people. The Blitz would make sense if you would like to invade this country, but this is impossible atm. The best war is a war without military action, what the US-Army need is a fine propaganda machine, with intrigues, effective lies, libels, exaggerations, arguments to fomenting the hate of the people against their leaders, weapon supplies to iranian underground, even to the wrong, just to weaken the enemy (the enemy of the enemy is ma friend). The tongue is superior to the sword. Probably the time has come that the old war with thousends of soldiers, hundreds of tanks, a/cs, humvees, F-22s and so on are obsolete, however it is able to win like in Iraq, but for which price. You have to put false colors upon your enemy, support the right opposition, etc to let the people of the nation to do the job with our help and not the other way round. At least that is what comes to my mind atm

How long is it going to take before they sent them back to China because of the high amounts of lead used in it or poisinous paint? That would decrease their tank-strenght.

About supplying the enemy of my enemy. The Talaiban used to be bombed in Clintons days (just some training camps after the bombing of the ambassy in Kenia). America did sent some weapons to the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan but not the kinds of weapons those guys needed to do serious battle against the Taliban.
I don't see the Americans sending their best or second best weapons to an organisation that they don't completly thrust. Nope, they would probably sent some leftovers that are worthless.

 

Iraq was attacked coz he had WDM,Iran will be for nuclear weapon ( r not?).

Maybe US public lack the Video games on CNN? Like the Roman emperors sayed "give the ppl bread and games"

I feal the same for Iran,US and Israle (as far is i know Israel got nukes too) and im really happy when Serbia shuted off the nuclear reactor we used ,and gived away last 20 Kg plutonium to Russia. If u develop ,and poses nuclear arsenal that give legitime right to any otther country to do the same. But lets get back few steps. Sadam was attacked coz he had WDM weapons and production facilitys right? Where they r? Any proof that Iran develop weapon,and not just for powerplant?

But ur right,atomic power shoud not be used to any purpose in world,coz potentialy disaster for global work can be cataclismic,and that is not only for Iran it is for whole world. Gues who use nuclear power in largest ammount in world?
