Hey, DesertWolf, check out our Israel/Palestine topic. Your views would be interesting to know. And yes, 'Hearts & Minds' is a good option.
This is not to justify what those soldiers did. But i have a friend who knows a soldier who is currently stationed in Iraq, and he says he can somewhat understand the U.S. soldiers reaction, because Iraqi's pretending to be dead have many times just been strapped with bombs and as soon as a sufficient number of U.S. troops close in, they blow themselves up... No wonder the soldiers then start shooting people pretending to be dead....!!!
This kind of thing also happened in, well, any war fought against fairly fanatical opposition. Examples include the Eastern Front in WW2, Korea, Vietnam... You want to make sure the guy is dead, because all too often a 'dead' guy sits up & shoots you, or chucks a grenade, or blows himself (and you) up, or similar.
Yes, i too understand the fear the soldiers have. What really triggered anger in the arab wold about the murder is that the soldier used profane language on a guy he was about to kill. Surprisingly enough , that has really caused people in Iraq and outside to violent outrage.
The big problem here is that the US soldiers are not prepared to lose soldiers, If you are on a peace making/keeping mission which this now is, you have to be prepared to lose some soldiers to show your intentions are for the benefit of everyone. If you kill everthing wnd anything that moves, breaths or looks like a killer then don't be suprised if the all turn against you. Personally I don't blame the soldier, however, he hasn't helped the cause. The biggest crime here as was with the prison faux pas was putting it in the media. As we all agree on this board attrocities are committed by both sides in all wars. the big question is are you there to win a war or win the peace.
Very good point, doesnt seel like ull win the pc by showing pictures of prisoner shooting in national tv.
