Largest binoculars you would find on a Royal Navy vessel in WW2, this would be mounted on directors stand, usually only found on cruisers and larger vessels. Today these are pretty rare birds to find and don't pop up very often, a favorite of the philistines who polish them and sell them for completely unrealistic money as "restored" ( really as destroyed) binoculars. The 10x80 from a still in the film "Sailor of the King". Coated lens, internal filters in good condition pretty good gear .
From the post-war movie "Sailor of the King", the Dido Class cruiser Cleopatra played the parts of the British ships, this clip shows a goodly collection of British WW2 binoculars, Ross and Barr and Stroud.
..the video has a lot of extra interesting stuff...very nice ..maybe some of those US ships that collided in the last few years needed some of those binos
Where is the best place to find/buy unrestored examples of British Naval Binoculars? My father had a pair of Ross 10x80 which we played with as children but were very unfortunately sold years ago. He served on HMS Renown.
