Germans in the East...

 

By the end of 1941 britain had delivered 249 Valentines and 187 Matilda II tanks, of which the majority were by then in the hands of the Red Army, and these accounted for no less that 25% of the medium/heavy tanks , and 30-40% of the medium/heavy tanks defending Moscow at this critical point. On 1 January 1942 there were 99 Hurricanes in service with the Red Air Force;16 percent of the fighters defending Moscow in December 1941 were Hurricanes or US-built Tomahawks, supplied by Britain.

Soviet counterattack Dec 6th 1941 and further...

" Stalin saw an opprtunity to win the war that very winter. What started out as a counter attack to save the Soviet Capital, would shortly become an all out offensive to annihilate the entire German Army in Russia. Stalin ordered STAVKA to work out details for a general offensive. It sounded simple on paper, but the strategists at STAVKA were safe in Moscow, seizing objectives by moving colored pins on large maps. Historian John Erickson wrote that " the day after Meretskov received his STAVKA directive ( 17 December), Kurochkin was staring down at his, apparently thunderstruck at its contents. The strategic objective lay tremendously deep in the German rear-Smolensk. "
