Enough German soldiers ranging from S.S. through to medical troops surrendered to the French who gave them the 'option' of joining the Foreign legion and serving in French Indo China (Vietnam) They were the only force (three battalions) who had any success against against the Viets, primarily because they were hardened in the use of tactics and treatment, learned mostly in Russia. Most of them over the years were either killed or died of disease but eventually the remainder were withdrawn. A quote from the Commander of the three battalions was: "If Hitler had conducted this war we would win because he would have made the Vietnamese a nation of women and children"!!! Quite a chilling statement but given the way the Viets treated and tortured soldiers they captured perhaps understandable.
