William H. Seward, the U.S. Secretary of State, engineered the Alaskan purchase in 1867 for $7.2 million. What would have happened if this deal never exist. So how important would Alaska have been during the cold war for the russians, would it have been an advantage for them, if they would have build submarine bases or deployed missles there ? Regards, Che.
Access would have been a bit difficult, relying on sea transport either from European Russia or from the Pacific coast after transport on the Trans-Siberian. Also, what is the chance that, post 1917, Alaska would have been gobbled up by the USA or the British Empire?
