I believe that Operation Desert Storm was the last major battle which involved extensive use of tanks and other armored vehicles. By that I meant hundreds of tanks from both sides facing each other in an open field. Other tank battles were mostly fought in the Middle East where there are vast areas of open terrain. Examples are the Iraqui/Iranian War, the Yum Kippur War, the 7-Day War). Use of tanks were somewhat limited during the Vietnam war and even during WWII in the Pacific, other than the tank battles in Libya involving Rommel, the use of tanks were selective. My question is: Does anyone foresee the possibility of a massive open terrain tank war in the size of Desert Storm? Further, won't the use of a variety of sophisticated anti-tank weapons plus the use of air power (re: Warthog and alike) make the tank somewhat obsolete?
There was considerable use of armored vehicles during the invasion of Iraq from what I recall although limited numbers of armored engagements.
