To use Social Democracy and Socialism as interchangeable terms ignores one of the basic tenets of Socialism which requires the abolition of private property.
Perhaps we can call it Socialism Light or Fat Free Socialism? :D

socialism has worked faily well in much of western europe for the last 50 years or so .but its success is predicated on the idea that most able bodied people work and create tax revenue .when there were 12 swedes working for every one welfare layabout it worked great ...when there are six workers supporting seven tosspots it starts to splinter a bit...

Not to mention the fact that when you start giving out money to those who will not work without condition or limit, it does tend to encourage some people to jump on the bandwagon.

There usually is condition - for example if unemployed they have to be actively seeking work or the money stops.

You can, however, cheat the system. But then, find me a fool-proof system.

Indeed... I don't tend to use the terms interchangeably myself, but it is a very notable phenomenon in American political discourse to equate Social Democracy with Socialism or even Communism. This is one reason why I always find myself in arguments with American members on here... :D

It's true that Social Democracy and the welfare state tend to work only in tims of economic prosperity. In times of depression they drag the system down further than it would have gone without. This could be seen in Germany a few years ago, where unemployment was staggeringly high and the welfare state made this unemployment a massive burden on the economy. On the other hand, at least there were no slums in the Tiergarten...

Hey Woody, you're not actually going to get me to believe that you won't be distracted by manga schoolgirls :D
