So another favorite WW2 "Foodie" item is finding period menus
I have worked in some crazy busy restaurants. But working in one in Bombay that caters to Chinese and European food? Sorry guys I tried calling for delivery but no answer.

..Americans throw away so much food....I learned to eat all my food and enjoy it more, by reading about the starvation in WW2....I try to teach my kids to clean their plates--and a lot of times they have a spoonful left...I tell them a spoonful is a lot

Study the Second World War and you will never look at a slice of buttered toast the same way again.

..speaking of buttered bread, we were doing some exercises in Virginia .....we lived and ate in big tents....we were only allowed so much chow..we were always given portions, but there we could have as much bread as we wanted....I really got to love buttered bread there ..I love it now, especially with spaghetti .
...we came out of the chow ''tent'' one time, and up the way one of the tents was on fire...it was an Army base and we had gasoline [ IIRC ]''stoves'' for heat --well, of course, a fire started ---one Marine burnt his hand getting the gas can away....
.well, that's my butter bread story

Reminds me of a neighbor when I was in LA. He was a Marine and smoked like a '61 Edsel. He also had a wee bit of a drinking problem. Anyway, I was washing my bike in the back yard one warm summer night and noticed flames coming from his bedroom. I ran in the back door and into his room and dragged him out of bed and got the mattress outside. He came casually staggering out after me and I had to ask him a question.

"Were you smoking in bed again?"

"Oh, no, I promised I wouldn't. The bed was on fire when I lay down."

By then the fire department had appeared and put the mattress out. They addressed the Marine by his first name. Frequent flyer.

we did have a corporal just like that...a drinker and smoker and--hahhaha--he also started a fire when he fell asleep
..this was about 30 years ago, but I remember him being on the ledge outside his window...he was lucky he didn't fall 1 story down
..back to food--we had Midrats on the Navy base we guarded.....so they had late chow for the personnel going on midnight shifts/etc, closing at midnight......with our duty hours 8- midnight, we would double quick time hurry to get everyone off post so they could get some chow...Marines jumping into the back of the pick-up truck fast .....my favorite midnight chow: cheeseburger and eggs

My favorite midnight chow: Fried egg on pancakes with maple syrup.

We had a cook who could make really good pancakes. He'd sprinkle chopped bacon into the batter as they cooked--if you asked nicely. Perfect way to end a swing shift.

One of the guys that lived on my floor when I was first arrived at Sigonella took a challenge one night at the enlisted club. The bartender lined up 32 shots of anisette and several sailors put $20 bills at one end. Ivan could have the money if he drank his way to it, if you know what mean. He had five minutes to drink a bottle of anisette. 3:47 later he was that much richer. Did I mention he had a big bushy blonde beard? Anyway, that night he got sick in his sleep and threw up on his pillow, without waking up. That shit hardened and by morning he couldn't get his face separated from his pillow. One of the guys had a straight razor and shaved the pillow off his face while he was standing in the shower. Would have made an epic Youtube if it hadn't been 1973.

OK, jba, I made these from your recipe for Cheese and Olive canapé. It's Superbowl time!

(Blended cream cheese and chopped olives on home-baked sourdough rye bread, topped with slices of pickled beet. They aren't all that elegant the way I've prepared them, but they are tasty! Another win for the Allies!)
