I came across this archive of issues of the Ottawa Citizen. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=QBJtjoHflPwC&dat=19390501&printsec=frontpage
and scrolled to 1939 where I randomly chose May 1, 1939. It was apparently a day which held reports significant to what would occur over the following 6 years.

Following are links to some of the article headlines.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=BO4uAAAAIBAJ&sjid=5tsFAAAAIBAJ&pg=6815%2C6001735 May 1 1939 – Ottawa Citizen Front Page Article Headline “Want Soviets to Place Military Resources at Other Nation’s Disposal”

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=BO4uAAAAIBAJ&sjid=5tsFAAAAIBAJ&pg=5268%2C6001130 May 1 1939 – Ottawa Citizen Front Page Article Headline “Report Poles Beaten by Nazis in German Silesia”

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=BO4uAAAAIBAJ&sjid=5tsFAAAAIBAJ&pg=6815%2C6001735 May 1 1939 – Ottawa Citizen Front Page Article Headline “Hitler Asserts He Needs Peace For Long Time”

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=BO4uAAAAIBAJ&sjid=5tsFAAAAIBAJ&pg=1949%2C6000544 May 1 1939 – Ottawa Citizen Front Page Article Headline “Some Form of Alliance by Four Powers is Expected”

The following two articles are arresting from a view of history in hindsight and are very poignant:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=BO4uAAAAIBAJ&sjid=5tsFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3385%2C5999656 May 1 1939 – Ottawa Citizen Front Page Article Headline “Le Havre Police Seize Nazi Baker”

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=BO4uAAAAIBAJ&sjid=5tsFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3420%2C6023176 May 1 1939 – Ottawa Citizen Article Headline page 4 “Recover Infant’s Body From River" Read as to why the child's body was found - so heartwrenching.

When we want to understand the thinking of the participants of World War II - governments, military, and citizenry - we need to refer to the newspapers of their times as a barometer of the times in which decisions were made by each group. A virtual step back in time....

    Interesting newspaper!

Interesting to note that that 'midget car' gets 60 miles to the gallon! Beats the socks of most cars today in regards to that!

Thank you Michelle, I dearly love links to digitized newspapers and magazines from the past. Truely revealing as to the time in which they were published. I also greatly enjoy the "old ads", some of them never changed for years and years. You would see the same ads in the fifties in PM and PS magazines here in the States.
