This last battle sucked. Oh, wait, I must correct myself - this last sequence of skirmishes sucked. There wasn't even a battle! The enemy had no positions and let itself be handled piecemeal, unit by unit. No wonder the team won! Can this program get any dumber. I am really disappointed at the new series. TV License? No, we recieve BBC1 and BBC2 on our TV here. I don't know how or why.
My friend has been waytching the series, and thinks it is very poor also. He told me a very amusing episode concerning one team and a 'magic hill'...
That was in the old series, which was actually very good. In those battles, the team was actually challenged to find a winning tactic, and if they failed to do so they would lose - even if they succeded they sometimes lost. The battle you are referring to had a team which believed holding the high ground would win them the fight, but they were an army of Visigoths facing the Romans! They lined up their fierce warriors on top of the hill... in defence. As the historical experts aptly remarked, "they're just lining them up to die".
Yay! The last episode was more or less back to good old Time Commanders. There was a real battle this time, the team faced a challenge, and the team lost. In the previous two shows, all the players had to do was keep their army together and they would win because the enemy had no coherence. Now they lost because they neglected their left flank and were overrun by elephants that got into their rear...
It was good wasn't it? I was suprised by their tactic of attacking the elephants with everything they had that was poor against elephants, (archers, light & heavy cavalry)and not at all with the one unit capable of beating them. (the long spear armed phalanxs). They also reacted poorly to the threat the elephants posed from the rear, and allowed their phalanxs to be taken from behind. They looked so good up until the first pause in the main battle. Maybe the pauses should be optional, with the Generals deciding if they need to utilise them or not? What do you think. The new presenter is beginning to annoy me as much as the siren. (Come back Eddy, all is forgiven). Having said that, it is good to have a program on TV like this, regardless of it's faults.
First one of this series that I've managed to watch. The skirmish I thnk is a bad idea as are those pauses, they break the flow of the battle. Also given that last nights team were British military it is it probably no wonder Britain doesn't have an empire any more.
The pauses are a crime, they break up the game for the viewer and they break up the realism of the command-a-battle element. I agree with david as I said earlier that this presenter is a nincompoop when compared to Eddy Mair, and the siren thing... Good idea about the pauses being optional, by the way; I doubt any general would go for them, as they tend to be imposed right at the point when everyone is in the thick of the battle. What I was so disappointed at was the fact that the team didn't use its phalanx at all, even though it is the Macedonian crack unit of Alexander's army. They fought a brilliant sweep on their right flank with the cavalry but failed to follow up with the phalanxes; then, naturally, the Indians took over on the left and smashed them. It was really perfect what the AI did there; only the worthless infantry ever engaged the phalanxes from the front, and the shock troops stomped right into their rear. In fact, none of the Phalanxes was ever engaged on the side where it had its pikes down.
Can anybody out there tell me how this week's team managed a victory?! I suspect that being political spin doctors they bribed the show to allow them to win, reguardless of how they played. I think the series must be getting easier, if you can still claim a victory even if you only realise that, phalanxes must be flanked very near the end of the show. Or as the blond put it: "We mustn't attack the ones with long pikes from the front." I do enjoy the show, though, but I dont like the siren or the presenter. (Did anybody else only just realise that he co-hosts 'Top Gear', or is it just me?)
Possibly leaning over the copuuter operator in a low cut top???
I do enjoy the show, though, but I dont like the siren or the presenter. (Did anybody else only just realise that he co-hosts 'Top Gear', or is it just me?)
Oh I dont know, I think the Hamster is improving.
I saw this show for the 1st time yesterday more by accident than design. comedy value = high. especially the bubbled headed yoga teacher blonde women and the fat bloke who didnt seem to have a clue even what day of the week it was. And the history guy u see pop on the various history programmes on satellite from time to time, loved his half arsed pony tail and da-glo permed hair (wots that all about). on the whole the actual content of the show seems pretty good background events leading to the battle etc the pauses were irritating tho as u lose the feel of what goin on and then some anaylsis of wot they should have or should be doing, like we dont already know cuz they been telling all the way thru with the running commentary. nice to see them show how the battle actually panned out, tho think this would better shown using the game computer models rather than the map desk. Anyway fairly interesting show
They have definitely dummed it down. The last series about half the teams lost and the ones that won generally had to work for it. Last nights bunch had about as much military clue as my Granny! For gods sakes they were spin doctors a profession that by definition isn't good at anything other than talking! They had the chance to hit pike in the side and they ran away  . On the whole I think we can attribute that victory to the power of cleavage.
They were stupid, infinitely stupid and they should never have won. I think they owe it in the end to the fact that the Roman army was much larger than it looked, because they kept having large units left... The humour in this one was splendid though. Here's some quotes. "Run away, save some lives!" "You don't need to run, there's only about four of you left, take a taxi!" "Big dead elephant on the field, don't ... trip over it" "This is the only battle where it would probably have been better if the generals had just stood there doing aboslutely nothing." "I think the operators are being a bit distracted there..." (obviously referring to cleavage! ) Aryeh Nusbacher is my hero!

"Big dead elephant on the field, don't ... trip over it"
Like I said, the hamster is improving - for those who dont get, or horror of horrors, dont watch Top Gear, Hamster is Hammonds' nickname Aryeh seems to have calmed down a fraction from the last series - he would normally have had those unit blocks flying through the air at the end demonstrating how unit X smashed through unit Y
I reckon the computer operator must have had a word with the editing staff cos I didn't see a hint of eyes flickering to the right despite what was being thrust into his field of view and lets face it that would be noticed. :smok:
I don't watch "Top Gear" as my car is not an extension of my penis   (no offence to Top Gear officianadoes). However; Jeremy Clarkson is V. witty.
They're good, I must say. They never let themselves be distracted, and you never see them say a single word. They purely follow orders. I think what Aryeh really meant is that he would be distracted were he in their place. Personally, I thought it a pity that the man clamed down so much. His throwing blocks around the room was always the climax of the whole program, yet in the first episode of this series he was so timid I feared the show had been off the air because their specialist had had some terrible disease. About the "Hamster", after his remark on the elephants on the field I think I heard one of the specialists, it may have been Aryeh, mutter something that had the word "barbeque" in it!
Glad its not just me that thinks the new series is dumbed down crap. They've definitly gone for a less talk more action approach so any real planning is out and the battles seem far, far easier
Troy battle How did the team win the Troy battle??, they seemed to spend most of their time either pretending their troops were going on parade or argueing amongst each other ???
I don't have time to read the whole topic, but do you guys now that they use the game Rome: Total war???
Yeah, and we all want it. Damn, I missed this last one because my friends aren't watching anymore and I was with one of them. Now I missed Troy!
