Well the USAAF didn't become the USAF untill 1947. So the lettering may be an indication.

Actually I'm the one who used USAF, the written text (see the pictures ) is

U.S. ARMY AIRFORCE in white and there is some yellow lettering before that (with a "T")

Von poops first model is pretty close. The Autocar has nothing to do with it, way too small. "Mine" is rond and has four hatches on the top.

Rounder, 4 hatches (possibly more convincing strapping too) :

nope not that one either, it's much longer the closest is really your first model. If the tank is about 9 meters, that would be about 4 or five times the length of that driver on your latest pic, so your tank looks like 4 meters at the most (not including the cabin) . The trailer refuelling the Mustang is really the closest.

I can't imagine that the tank was very mobile without wheels under it. Maybe it was in a fixed postion, but a stationary USAAF tank and not at an airfield? You are probably correct that it may been damaged and removed from a carriage/trailer of sorts.

That is the type of picture I was looking for Adam. What search criteria did you use?

Sorry it took a while to check Jeff, but that particular one was 'Army fuel Bowser GMC' on images. 'Autocar trailer' seems to get quite close too.

Americans have been around after the war too until 1966, so we have a maximum time scale of 22 years (1944-66). It could also be a 40s relic that was recycled for other purposes after the war. I will see if I have more details on others pictures.

It does look like it might be a towed fuel trailer.

Well, that's what's we've been trying to figure out for the last two pages. I'm still hoping someone would come up with an answer.

As you might know, there are rumours that Martin Bull has hidden a number of tanks all around in the middle of Europe. Who knows if he hasn't some Mosquitos and ME's too in some barn.

Don´t you think that it his gasoline container?

FWIW, this is the only fairly good photo I can find ( from Roger A Freeman's 'Mighty Eighth War Manual' ). I don't think it's the same as Skipper's, but the lettering can be seen....

Martin , yes this is the one! The metal circles around the tank were there too , they were just detached andfalling apart, but they are there too! As to the ladder it is in fact bent and you can see part of it on top still attached to the hatches. Even the writing starts at the same place.
