Berlin Dance of Death Helmut Altner. Interesting autobiography of an 17 year old who was called up for service in the last days of the war. I is a testament to how badly fouled up the German military was by then. This guy "fights" his war with weapons picked up almost at random. He never really sees any combat and what little he does participate in is mostly so confused he has no idea what is going on. He is mostly concerned about getting something to eat and not getting killed. Basically, you follow his days shaking your head about how useless his war was.
Johnnie Johnson and "Wingleader" from the 1950´s. Should be interesting.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnie_Johnson_(RAF_officer) Amazon.com: Wing Leader: Top-Scoring Allied Fighter Pilot of World War Two (9780773732407): James Edgar Johnson: Books
Hello gentlemen, Just finished 'Fields of Fire', by Terry Copp. I'm halfway in 'The Black Bull', by Patrick Delaforce, and out of sheer enthousiasm I've ordered 'The Charge of the Bull', by Jean Brisset ( which cost me a fortune !!). Regards, I-16 Rata
Spartan Gold by Clive Cussler. Early in the book a German Molch one man sub is discovered in a swampy area of Maryland. What it contains leads to the rest of the book!
I just finished Command of Honor. a biography of Lucian Truscott by H. Paul Jeffers. Good read. Next up Leningrad: State of Siege, by Michael Jones.
The Bitter Woods - Eisenhower Recently: Citizen Soldiers, Band of Brothers, D-Day, Dangerous Assignment...
I just finished Leningrad: State of Siege. I hope there is a special place in hell for both those who planned the deliberate starvation of Leningrad and the self-serving city leadership, including Andrei Zhdanov and his minions, who prospered as the city was dying. A most disturbing book.
Im reading a book about the Battle of Berlin, currently the name escapes me but, its been a pretty darn good book.
Not WWII but just about done with Book 2 of Shelby Footes Civil War trilogy. Excellent reading Perhaps the best book I've read recently is Marcus Luttrells "Lone Survivor". Incredible story about a Navy Seal team in Afghanistan. Mind blowing what they went through.
Hello gentlemen, Just started in ´Troop leader, A tank commander´s story´, by Bill Bellamy. It looks promising. Regards, I/16 Rata
I've just finished Andrew Robert's Masters & Commanders (about Churchill/Brooke & Roosevelt/Marshall) and now reading the same author's The Storm Of War which is about how Axis strategy developed - it is very good reading.
a Classic and probably the best written: Militärische Ferngläser und Fernrohre in Heer, Luftwaffe und Marine bei Hans Seeger. Optiks serving in the Wehrmacht essentially. My new purchase is covered and am still trying to discover Skippers if at all possible, loaded with poics covering the time pre-WW 1 till and through the 1960's. nothing but excellent and very hard to find title now and quite expensive if found. E ~
I just purchased Forgotten Soldier and Hans Von luck's Panzer Commander from at A&R. Whilst I was in Angus & Robertson i noticed as well as the above mentioned titles there was Heinz Guderians Panzer book, 2 of John Eriksons titles, Iron cross, Das Boot, Iron Coffin, Michael K Jones's Leningrad + many others. Now Ive never noticed these books in a bookstore before. Are these titles common for Aussie bookstores or is this just a recent thing ?
