Liking movies made in Black & White only show that you have great taste in movies. As for being called an old codger for liking them--heck no ;-)) I'm slightly older than you are-but am the youngest in the family-and I get called "Old-Fashioned" just because I like much better, movies made more than 30 years ago-compared to most of whats made today-which IMO-is mostly garbage.

If you saw my some 370-odd DvD collection-you'd find the vast majority og them are movies 30 years old and older. The oldest I have untill I get Buster Keatons: "The General" in, dates to 1929 or 1930. I know that isn't really that old but ;-)) it's much older and doesn't suit any of my family members tastes. I have to remind them-kindly, that when they gripe about me watching something old on the Tele-or one of my older DvDs, that I didn't buy any of my movies with them in mind ;-D

Anyway, Falcon/ you have an excellent taste in movies.

    Take care and best regards-C.

PS, TA, wtid, you both also have great tastes in movies. ;-))

PSS, failed to mention that I saw two excellent episodes of COMBAT last night-one of which is a 2nd season 2-parter called: "What are the bugels playing for?" or something like that? Anyway, this 2-parter has Sgt. Saunders and his squad fighting along side British Soldiers-who are trying to hold onto some town and are positioned at a train station. This is an excellent 2-part episode predominantly featuring British Soldiers. Also apparently the costumer-took particular great care on the British uniforms shown.

In-between COMBAT episodes-a great episode of: Twelve O'Clock High. I didn't catch it's title but, an American B-17 was flying from Russia with two American Generals aboard-who had basically toured the Eastern Front-to see how well of f the Russians were and who had been in on the planning for the long wanted-second front. Well, they were shotdown almost in no mans-land, and fooling the Germans initially that they wer long dead German corpses ina bombed out Church-they wind up in afire-fight with more Germans and a few of them just barely make it out alive-being rescued by a truck-load of Russian oldiers.

29-30? I thought it was bad, my friends laughing at me when they find out I got movies starring Ronald Reagan. I then do the same as you. Kindly remind them that I watch the films not them

PS. My oldest movie is I think from 40 or 41

I watched the last debate and was very underwhelmed ! The "Joe the plumber" bit was really dumb.
Think I will vote Ralph Nader as a protest vote. ;)

I wish they would let the voters ask the questions instead of newscasters.

Ah, Combat, the TV series that my dad and I watched regularly when I was a kid. I enjoyed the series and several episodes easily come to mind. The first one is about the squad agreeing to work with a German squad in order to rescue a child from a wrecked building. They called a truce and it was the first time in my life that I realized that the word "enemy" is just a tag. Underneath that tag, the "enemy" is also human, sharing the common ideal that life is sacred. I always recall with fondness the scene at the end when they realized that the child they were trying to rescue was dead. The two squads, looking disheveled and tired walked side by side for a while then parted ways.
I also liked their first episode. Rick Jason's character was a master sergeant then.
The other good episode I liked is when Sgt. Saunder was stunned by an explosion and separated from his squad. He was dazed and deaf. The story was well written, showing how hard it was for him to escape and return to friendly lines.

Saw They Who Dare today; one of the better British war films of the '50s. Definitely improved by the producers managing to borrow some airworthy Italian SM79s from the Lebanese airforce and using them in several flying sequences.

Not to derail the thread with politics, but Joe the Plumber is a real person. From Wiki
    [edit] Joe the Plumber

During the debate repeated references were made to Joe Wurzelbacher, aka "Joe the Plumber"[39] Wurzelbacher had confronted the candidate while Obama was canvassing in Holland a suburb of Toledo, Ohio where Wurzelbacher complained that Obama's tax policy would make it difficult for him to expand his business and hire more employees if he bought the business that he had been employed at as a plumber. Obama gave a five minute response, which Wurzelbacher later dismissed as "tap dancing...he was almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr." which led to accusations of racism.[40] [41][39][42] McCain repeatedly brought up "Joe the Plumber" and Obama and McCain then made statements aimed directly at Wurzelbacher. These events led to subsequent media attention directed at Wurzelbacher.[43][44][45] After the debate, Wurzelbacher, who has been a registered Republican since 1992 under the name "Samuel Joseph Worzelbacher," did not declare his vote for either senator, although he expressed concern that Obama's plans were "one step closer to socialism."[46] Obama's running mate Joe Biden argued that the vast majority of small businesses are smaller than Wurzelbacher's

I watched game 5 of the NLCS last night.

Thanks DG, and anything else you could find out about him would be nice. Also, do you know if they have any pictures of him visiting?

Normally I don't care about what actors did or liked but, in this case-as well as in Dukes case; I don't mind knowing more ;-))

Hi Mike, even just going back to 1940 tells me you have a nice movie collection. Speaking of Ronald Reagan movies: I have been wanting to get Knute Rockne-All American on DvD for quite sometime. The only reason I haven't-is because im always buying war and western movies--which is no excuse. Anyway, I don't know if you have it-but he was ina grea Civil War Western originally called: The Last Outpost. This movie was re-released on DvD under the title: Cavalry Charge. This movie stars the great one himself-Bruce Bennett (as his Yankee Officer/Brother, and Noah Beery Jr. as Rons Confederate Sgt/Aide de Camp. This is I think rated as a "B" western but-it has "A" class actors in it.

Another Reagen film I think you might like is Tennessee's Partner. I wish they would release Desperate Journey and Prisoner of War on DvD-Ronald Reagan was great in both of those.

In: Desperate Journey-he is with Errol Flynn, Arthur Kennedy and Alan Hale Sr.-who are a British Bomber Crew. Their chief nemesis in this movie is: Raymond Massey-who plays a German officer and looks sinester as heck.

Prisoner of War is a Korean PoW camp story. Ronald Reagan has to parachute in behind enemy lines because he is supposed to be captured and to make contact with another agent who is already in the PoW camp. The other guy fakes being won over bu the commies very well-and you don't know he's one of the good guys-till the very end. This movie also has a young Steve Forrest in it. This and the above mentioned movie, are my most favorite of Reagan's films-oh and I forgot he was also with Errol Flynn in Santa Fe Trail-another good western.

Great series it was/is. I fondly remember many great episodes=especially 1st and 2nd season shows. Some of my favorites include: A Long Way Home pts 1=2, What are the bugels playing for? pts 1-2, Masquerade, Sniper, and so many others.

I haven't seen the episode that you mention--that is--yet. I do have the entire series on DvD so, i'll be coming to it sometime soon ;-D

I watched all of Combat! in sequence last year. I think I must have watched 4 or more episodes each day until I finished it and by the time I got to season 4, I was sometimes watching 6 or 7 episodes and getting very little sleep! (It helped that my company was in the midst of being sold and there was nothing for us to do!)

The episode that stays with me is one in which Sargeant Saunders befriends a young French girl who manages to break through his shell. They picnic and go to a park and Saunders is happy for a time. I won't give away the ending in case some of you have not seen it, but those of you who have will agree that it is a compelling story, I'm sure!

Yes, that was a compelling story. There were other episodes in the series that had a similar theme. And good move on your part not reveal the ending for those who haven't seen much of the Combat series. I'll keep your example in mind.

I am a big fan of animation and I have been for years. Bugs Bunny has always been at animation's peak for me. Accordingly, I spent some time searching around for WWII era Bugs (and other animation) today and I found a few gems, including some that have been taken out of circulation. Here are a few links for anyone who wants to explore WWII cartoons, but note that some of the depictions are notably racist by today's standards.

Tokio Jokio (1942) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_km9IFzzHo&feature=related This one depicts a very stereotypical view of the Japanese and their technologies. Depictions are reminiscent of Mickey Rooney's Japanese character in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Daffy the Commando (1944?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by3FVKdaQyE&feature=related This one depicts Daffy going behind enemy lines.

Herr Meets Hare (1945) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnZkTUNBzW0 Bugs meets Goering in the Black Forest, impersonates Hitler and generally makes me laugh!

You're a Sap Mr. Jap http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEK45-_5y0s Popeye takes on the Japanese Navy and wins. Astonishingly racist but a great trip to the movies in the early '40s.

Spinach fer Britain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHo91px5YTs&feature=related Apparently predating US entry into the War, Popeye takes on German u-Boats to get spinach to Britain!

Der Fuehrer's Face http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rrvu5G-hBs&feature=related Donald Duck starring in a music video of the song.

Education for Death http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3VSWz2UqhY&feature=related Walt Disney explains how children are turned into Nazis. This one is creepy, but it is Disney so I include it here.

Let me know if anyone else is interested in propaganda cartoons and I'll post more as I find them.
