My daughter was supporting the Argies and I liked the Germans, not that I watched the game, though.

Funny our national and local news was all abuzz about how Soccer has finally turned the corner in the hearts of Americans. Always in the first segment of the news, often the lead story.....until the US was eliminated. There after it landed in the second or third segment except for the historic drubbing by Germany.

While it might change someday, the NFL, NBA, MLB (and their college counterparts), PGA and NASCAR will always have top billing in the US over soccer which dwells in the basement of our hearts along with Hockey for the foreseeable future.

This is just my opinion, but two factors seem to put a brake on any strong affection being generated in the US. The first is, to many American's at least, no sense of strategy within soccer as its played. What I and many others see is a bunch of guy's running around almost aimlessly chasing the ball after somebody kick's somewhat in the general direction of the opposing goal. By any measure they are great athlete's simply for the stamina, but no sense of drama that the NFL/MLB seem to provide. The whole concept of Bonus/stoppage time, time the audience has no idea how much actually exists, will never compete with 4th and goal, one second on the clock, or bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, 2 strikes and the winning run on third base.

Secondly, unless something changes in the near future, America's biggest college's are geared to produce large numbers of world class players in our traditional sports, but not for soccer. Until they can fill a 40-80,000 person stadium for a college soccer match there will be no scholarships offered for our best talent and bringing in car loads of foreign players won't change that attitude.

See? This is why I don't understand soccer. Why is this man holding up a large golden sex toy?

I hope you all realize you have been getting off topic ..... Are you even aware how the Dutch eventually performed?
