 I am having serious trouble remembering what Battleships where at Pearle Harbour. I know there was Arizona, Oaklahoma but from there I draw a blank.

Also I would like to get as many information I can on US Carriers during WW2 to today!

As a canadian we dont get to see carriers (We havent had one since 1974) and I would love to get as much info and generate discussions on the topic if posssible.

    Thanks a million:D

Nevada, Arizona, Tennessee, West Virginia, Maryland, Oklahoma, California, Pennsylvannia and the target ship Utah an ex battleship converted to a target -having a false timber protective deck may have been mistaken for a carrier.

Thanks all! We spell it "Google.ca" But I have another question; Why did the Commander of Pearle not have any AA defences around the base and especially the harbour? Why where there so few destroyers in the region?

Sorry if this shoudl be common knowldge but I am afraid being Canadian we dont really learn this in depth at school!

I count 30 destroyers (DD), 9 destroyer minelayers (DM) and 4 destroyer minesweepers (DMS) in Pearl Harbor and the immediate area on the day of the attack. The DD number includes three that were in drydock (Cassin, Downes and Shaw)

There were 9 DDs with TF 8 (Enterprise), 200 miles from Pearl inbound.

There were 5 DDs with TF 12 (Lexington) 460 miles from Midway, en route there.

There were 5 DMs with TF 3 (Indianapolis) at Johnson Island.

There were 4 DMSs in the FLeet Operating Area, 25 miles S of Pearl Harbor.

One DD was 60 miles South of PH

That is a large portion of the Central Pacific Fleet and the US Fleet in general.

BTW, they don't teach about Pearl Harbor in very much depth here, either.

Funny how when you Google "Pearl Harbor 1941" there are 7,160,000 hits for it.

The deck was just a layer of wood over the existing decks, not a canopy. No pilot in the Japanese flight should have mistaken her for a CV. They were told that she was in that position and to ignore her. Simple buck fever, evidently.

It is true that at least through 1942 the US fleet was critically short of destroyers.
