Some points to ponder: First, have a series of rally points for your family. If a tree renders your current situation untenable, where do you meet for a head count? Have one nearby, one a few blocks away, and one at an agreed-on shelter. Make sure the kids know this information. This is for fire, flood, holocaust or the Rapture. Two, masking tape does jack for keeping glass from flying. If you seriously want to protect your family, invest in some plexiglas to cover your windows, at least on the side most threatened. You can mount bolts in the window frames to make putting them up quick and easy. A few hundred dollars invested could save your whole home. Three, get some medical training. Just knowing how to stop bleeding could save someone's life, and in an emergency you can't count on the medics to come when you call them. They might be up to here in alligators already. Any more?
We are ok here in MD. Irene weakened during the night as well as moving to NYC around 9 am this morning. No real damage around the house...highest wind was aroud 2 am with 35 mph north wind. Thanks for the prayers Bigfun!
Agreed. My friends in Penn. and NYC were not impressed. (The NYC person is a brand new mother, she's one block from the highest point in New York, wherever that is. However her family lives in a basement apartment. She'd giving us hourly updates.)
This hit me as a Category 2 in the Turks and Caicos on Wednesday. High winds knocked some trees over at my house, ripped the screens off my sunroom and dumped a lot of sand on my beach, but there was no serious damage. Most of the roads were flooded for a few days.
Sounds like Irene was a little short in the "ire" department. I'm pleased to hear that the damage was much less than feared, at least based on the comments here. I haven't been following the news much, so hopefully these reports are indicative of the overall situation.
In my area of the woods, some people lost power and a little flooding. Hope everybody else in the path is good.
The storm was pretty much a bust, much to the chagrin of the people at The Weather Channel and the other major network weather departments. They tried like hell to get all they could out of it. It was such a silly effort on their part to make something out of this storm. What they don't realize is that they can cry wolf only so many times on events like this before the "scare factor" subsides. I understand that hurricanes are rare in that part of the US, just as sneaux storms are here in the south, but the coverage was as close to yellow journalism as weather prognosticators can get.
It's the "tragedy TV" effect. They have to gin up a crisis to boost their ratings. Apparently the new media aren't familiar with the "crying wolf" effect.
