We have a niece there! Scary situation for a while. Looks like the shooter shot himself.

A year or two after the earlier shooting I happened to meet a lecturer from there, and asked whether anything had been learned from it. He replied, sadly, no - the US generally is obsessed with the notion that the right to own and use guns must never be infringed. If that, unsurprisingly, costs lives, then so be it.

This is so sad, I can't believe this happened again at the same spot.

Guess all those "gun-free zone" laws and signs don't mean all that much to those who are criminally-minded. Maybe make it an open-carry campus? Bad guys typically tend to think twice (or thrice) when their potential victims are not so helpless.

Prayin for the family of the officer who lost his life. :S!

Since this coward killed himself, we can only speculate as to why he chose this place to murder a police officer. My guess is that he knew it would get a lot of media attention because of the murders in 2007. Incidentally, as RA hinted, college campuses are, for the most part, "gun-free zones" and are usually posted as such. Criminals are not inclined to obey such signs or laws because they law-breakers. They either don't plan on getting caught or, like this coward, they plan on killing themselves.

Should ban freedom of speech for all because a few abuse it? How about the freedom of assembly? Freedom of the press? It makes no sense to deny law abiding citizens their Constitutionally protected rights because some whack job abuses it. If one doesn't like the 2nd Amendment, they are free to not exercise that Constitutional right. In fact, they are also free to assemble and speak in order to try to build support to repeal the Bill of Rights if they want to do so. Good luck with that.

The person had stolen a car, and was stopped by the policeman and panicked. His response in shooting the law enforcement officer is inexcusable, but his own suicide is understandable. Panic and fear of what was going to happen next. He was a coward however, not only in shooting the cop, but taking his own life rather than facing the music on the two other crimes. Grand theft auto, and homicide.
