As you have enjoyed my offerings from the Rhine tour I thought you may like to see some photos from last years Normandy jaunt? As this is pre-eminently a US based forum i thought I'd start with a few sites you will have heard of..

    Sainte Mere Eglise

No trip to this town is complete without seeing the John Steele dummy on the church steeple.

    The Pointe du Hoc

The stunning Pointe du Hoc which was attacked by US rangers who scaled the cliffs shown using grappling irons to mount the assault. The shell holes are courtesy of the USS Texas. An amazing place.

Utah Beach. A personal favourite. Wide and quite desolate with some superb casemates to explore.

Omaha Beach. Unfortunately the tide was in. The most interesting part of the visit was to climb up to the 75mm gun position that afforded a field of fire right along the beach...

The 88mm Gun is caged in now and sticking your camera through the grill is as close to it as I could get. A real shame..

Thanks again for the fantastic photos ! Those craters from the USS Texas are impressive. Couldn't imagine having a 14'' coming at me.

The pictures are magnificent. I wish I could go there, but since I can't, I'll have to live vicariously through photos like yours. I can't imagine what it must have been like for the young men who participated.

    Another excellent set of photos!

It's good to see that you can now enter the fire control bunker at Point du Hoc as it used to be fenced off with no access to it.

The fortifications on Utah Beach are abundant and if you look hard enough you can still find relics in some of them.

Great pictures and what I would Give, Do or Promise if only to be able to hang-glide over Omaha Beach like the guy above!

Again, another set of magnificent photos, Jonathan. Thank you for sharing them. I also am in awe of the craters. I would imagine the impact and concussion would have been quite something to experience.
