I visit the Gemini forums, of course. Axishistoryforums.com. Armchairgeneral.com Couple of others that are near dead and only need a visit once a week. Whatchagot?
This is my Home Base. Other than that I just frequent research sites like AFHRA, NARA, some place called hyphen-war (or something like that) and fold3. And sites the folks on here direct me to from time to time.
Maybe im naieve...but i dont feel i need to go elsewhere...im MORE than confident with the breadth of knowledge already aboard...its a one stop shop, that in my opinion will garner acclaim in the years to come...more than a few are trying to create the ultimate database...difficult to beat this site already.
Depends, I feel quite uncomfortable with new forums, there are different opinions and conversations you can't really just 'butt into', I feel like every forum, whatever the overlay or overhead discussion is, are just suburbs, if you're a kid from another town going into another place all willy nilly - you're going to have a bad time. I visit histomil.com now, I like it. They have massive photo dumps. I feel the conversation here is alienated or dry, for now. Most conversations have branched out and been done to death while there's a search engine, it just isn't the same reading other's conversations rather than being apart of it. When I am engaged with the current thread, I feel that I learn more that way, whether you would describe that more hands on or personal, I feel I can cite that discussion better than what I've read a few pages of between two individuals I have no idea. Plus, I get quite lost in citations and arguments. However I would probably would wanna get into an alternative reality site, or one that expresses some kind of RP elements. That being all said, ww2f has been one of my homepages/tabs since I joined up in '06.
The main site I use is ww2talk Just joined ww2f a few days ago and have enjoyed visiting a few times a day, although I haven't found any threads I feel I can contribute to yet. Lesley
HMVF's not specifically WW2, but often has good stuff on restorations, etc. I lurk rather than post, sort of like reading a vehicle magazine when in the mood. Arrse's Military History section is worth a browse - regularly has good recollections/photos from Postwar chaps' experiences, with a solid smattering of WW2 chat in their own uniquely 'robust' style. Quite often find myself following links into The Missing Lynx AFV discussions, and Landships can be a great read for WW1 & Interwar vehicle stuff. Overvalwagen has a pretty readable subject specific forum too - got to admire the thoroughly covered niche interest. And there's another one that slips my mind for the mo... ~A
I've got a few that I keep an eye on. World War II Talk, Armchair General, WWII Chat and Axis History Forum. I tend to post only when a subject interests me and I feel as though I can contribute something to the discussion, so I need to have a number of sites to check out.
This is the only WWII related forum that I visit regularly. As for other WWII related websites, I also spend time at NARA, CARL Digital Library, TankDestroyer.net, Veterans History Project and CMH. I haven't heard of that "hyphen war" website that Biak mentioned, but I do use HyperWar which is an indispensable source for all things WWII. Oh, I forgot. Biak got me hooked onto Fold3. Well worth the price of admission, but try to get it on sale.
Okay, okay. The OP who started the thread (who happens to be OP? what are the odds) wanted to know how many forums we visit. Since I've caused SO much confusion here ya go. Forum (S) * Just one : WW2f. No need to go anywhere else. I'll publicly admit HyperWar is the first place I go to to search for things. followed by AFHRA then CMH then usually back to WW2f and then back to HyperWar. The DOD site is also good for many Historical papers. Fold3 has a good focus on the Army Air Force If I had more time I'd offer to transcribe some of those HTML / PDF files but too many fires burning right now. plus I don't know what transcribe is. P_grenate1:
"Transcribe" means to take the almost illegible original and make it a human-readable file. The organic processing unit is still smarter than the silicon one. And this may be the last chance for some of these documents to see the light of day. I've had some come apart when I took them out of the scanner. We're in danger of losing this information forever. For some reason that worries me.
Know the feeling well and I only had a few hundred pages of 'onionskin' paper to worry about. I ended up typing the entire thing since the scanner couldn't pick up the majority of the faded ink. If you get in a pinch contact me. I could always work in a few hours a week. seriously!
I'm happy whatever work people want to give, a page a day is fine. We stress accuracy over speed. Any area you're interested it? I have 2.5 gigabytes of files in my Pending Uploads folder, waiting for someone to love them.
5th AAF for starters. ? You know me, SWPA and those gorgeous P-47s Other than that - whatever. Send me a PM later and I'll get back with you tomorrow.
