    Hi
Hope someone can give me some information.
Recently found a Palestine 1945-48 medal thrown away in our woodland (looks like theft) will hand it in to police but wondered if i could trace the owner myself (not sure if police would be that bothered!).
It has a number around the side with a name (don't want to give on public forum) and REME presumbly royal engineers and mechanical engineers. Can i trace the recipient somehow. I'm sure if it was my dads medal i would want it back.
    Thanks

Get in touch with the local press.
Get them to run a story on it.

While I have no further suggestions, this is a good thing on the OP's part. I think it's something that should be done. I think you are correct that the police would not follow up on it. Use the suggestions given and I'm sure that you'll be successful. Good luck.

Have a look through the above TNA file, it's free to download, the first link should work but if not click on View this Record tab in the second link. I know you have name and no. anyway, but sometimes there is extra information, other than qualification, in the Remarks column on the right hand side. Might give you an idea eg of when or with which unit (Workshops/LAD) they served.

    Good luck.

D - Thanks for posting this. I didn't know it existed and it is somewhere else where I can look for details about my grandad!

    Update

Have found the owner thanks to yourselves and a very helpful friend of a friend who is a senior inspector in the police.
The medal belonged to the owners son who lives fairly near here and had it stolen in a burglary.
We were given his contact details and he has arranged to collect it.
Again many help for your advise.

Well done, patterdale. It was an especially good deed considering the circumstances of the burglary. I can say from personal experience that burglary is an awful thing to go through. I'm sure that your act of kindness was very much needed and appreciated by the family.
