Winter war- war between Russia and Finland started in 1939. The western allied promised troops but these promises were mostly political as we´ve seen.

Yet what if the French and British had sent fresh troops ( 50,000-100,000 ) to fight in Finland against the Russians? Would Russia be forced to withdraw and sue for peace or would this lead into bigger war between the western allied and Russia, and Germany´s pact with Russia getting stronger, or would Germany take advantage and attack Russia in the "back"?

    Ideas?

I think it's quite obvious. The allies would have had to use Norwegian territory to send troops to Finland. Hitler would have seen the threat for the Swedish ore and hastened to invade Norway. This would have forced the Allies to retreat not to be trapped, and the Soviets would have succeeded in the war anyway.

In fact, I think there would have been little impact. Despite of this - did the Finnish really WANT French/English help?

    KnightMove,

I think you have read more on the subject, haven´t you? Good. I mean this is something that comes up as Finland in late Winter War didn´t make the official call for help as the western allied requested.

But we tried to make something out of it:

    23 Feb 1940

Finland requests Sweden and Norway to grant transit rights for foreign troops.

    27 Feb 1940

Sweden and Norway declines the Finnish request.

    Anyway,

It can be asked why didn´t the western allied make the troops ready for action earlier?
In Feb/March 1940 it was kinda late.
The Finns as well suspected the troops would end up in Norhern Sweden ( as they would have actually ) and not in Finland. Making the request Finland would have as well made an end to possible peace negotiations with Russia and by the time as no troops were in sight we had to take the only choice left for Finland, and accept the peace terms by Russia.

Some thoughts have been as well raised to the thought that the fighting between France/England and Germany/Russia by the movement of troops to Sweden/Finland would have placed the fighting out of the European mainland. This would have meant fierce battles and destruction in Norway, Sweden and Finland... you know, politics can be cruel sometimes...and this is why Norway and Sweden did not accept the allied troops travelling through their countries!
