    Ah thats not much.
    But very nice to find.

Here some close ups from the awesome find I did in the Eifel a few weeks ago with Aru-Ed. Its a wallet made of a german cap cockarde, and uniform insignia (trench-art). In it a golden ring, and coins from Ireland, US, England and France and some German uniform buttons, also some very nice silver coins.

First id like to say AWESOME pics!!I really liked the then and now photos.I do have a few questions though.Do you find most of this stuff on private land or public? What does the local authorities say about all the ordinance you find?Do they allow you to keep everything you find?Have you tried to contact the families of the people on the dogtags?

Anyway great pics, thanks for posting them and keep'em coming!

    Hi y'all!

What a great forum this is and this tread is one of the best I've seen in my life! The pictures, details and info are just amazing. It impressed me so much that I'm going with a couple of friends to the Hurtgenwald and the Eifel region myself this month. Since I'm not an experienced user of a metal detector; what should I know about this great hobby? I've read this tread (and others) carfully and I know it is wise to leave high explosives alone. But is there a special way of digging to minimise risks? How dangerous is it to bring home ammunition? Anyway, I hope to get a reaction before we're off to this beatiful forest in Germany.

    Thanks!

Hi Tocq, welcome to this fine forum and good luck with your search. Firstly , if you are not experienced it may be safe to take someone with you and never try to transport life amno on foot or by car, it's both illegal and very dangerous and rusted shells and bullets are often extremely unstable.

I would clarify that a bit. Small arms ammo represents only a modest hazard. Anything with high explosives, a shell, grenade, mine, whaterver. DO NOT DISTURB IT! These can still explode and in some cases only require a minor disturbance to do so.

Skipper and T.A. Gardener have given good advice...if it looks dangerous or you're not sure what it is, then leave it well alone.

I've been to the Hurtgen forest area a few times and found a number of items but I always leave live ammunition where I find it. As well as it being dangerous it is also illegal to transport it back to the UK.

Also be aware that the local authorities take a dim view to metal detecting and will come down on you hard if they catch you. This said, you don't necessarily need a detector to find items as they are often lying on the ground or a just visible in the earth.

Most of the more easy accessible places have been previously well dug by other relic hunters so you may find it difficult to find anything interesting. There are however places that may still hold some good finds, so it's a matter of doing your homework before you go.

I'm going back there later this year with Pegasus and will hopefully have some luck in finding a few good relics.

Well, we finally went to the Hürtgenforest and made some pictures. We had our first base camp about 100 yards next to der Rote Wehe where the german front line was. We didn't find much WWII items here, but the area was wunderfull! Before we left we did a lot of research to find all the bunkers and the were the US and German soldiers were located. After the Hürtgenwald we left for the Eifel area near the Belgium border. We put our tent next to a machine gun bunker. We found loads of stuff over there but nothing really special. I'll post pictures of the things we found later this week.
