Now, as she dwells on the memories of her brother, Mrs Pearson said she is concerned at SPREADING conspiracy theories in Liberia that the virus was created by the U.S. She said she gave credence to the rumours because of how her brother was treated after he arrived in America. I lived in Africa some years ago and there was a lot of distrust of 'white' medicine. It was so sad to hear of babies dying of an easily treatable condition like dehydration as they were treated by the local witchdoctor. It was the same with aids where some men believed that raping a child would somehow cure them. Witchcraft is still alive and well where any sickness is the result of bad intent from another and not germs or disease. If your crops fail or if your roof collapses, it is again through bad intent. I often heard of witch hunts in local villages. I do not know how these beliefs can be overturned, as for many, they are deeply held in their culture.
