In keeping with this topic hopefully you can help. I am writing a novel which involves the Higland Light Infantry 2nd battalion. I have a Sergeant in a platoon so I am assuming it would be First platoon 2 HLI, but how would I attach the company component? Secondly the HLI had two battalions, how many companies, platoons would there be per battalion? Lastly did the British attach numbers or letters to squads? I have a platoon Led by a Lt. with one Sgt. 3 squads and 3 Corporals. About 45 men. Is this close to accurate? Time period is 1938, but I don't think it changed during WWII. Sorry so long winded Thanks so much

Welcome to the forums. Hopefully this link will give you a starting point- http://www.bayonetstrength.150m.com/British/Infantry/british_infantry_battalion%201939%20to%201940.htm
Standard British infantry battalions had four rifle companies (designated A, B, C, D) plus an HQ company and sometimes a separate support company. Platoons were numbered consecutively across the whole battalion (1, 2, 3, etc) but I am not quite sure how that system worked.
Also: Infantry organization for much of the 30's was based on that of 1918 and so not quite the same as that in WWII. Bombers (grenadiers) were grouped in separate sections, for example, and battalions had their own medium (Vickers) machine gun platoons. I am not certain when the switch to the WWII organization was made.
