There is a big difference between wish someone dead due to there actions and killing them. The death penalty does not stop murder, but actually increases the chance.

As someone who has not lost a relative to crime or had someone seriouslyinjured etc. I can look at it from a more impartial view, if I had been effected I might think the other way but that would not be impartial and/or rational.

By the way the death penalty is still a punisment in the U.K,
    Also

If you break into a house with a gun and are confronted with the owner who is armed, either he kills you or you kill him. If you kill him then you (if caught) will die. In this case it is better to kill all the occupants who have seen you to increase the chance of getting away.

Are you sure about that? I thought the last few capital crimes ended when the the European human rights convention became a part of British law.

Ok it was until recently available for treason, but will check about today.

    Just found this.

On 10th December 1999, International Human Rights Day, the UK Government ratified the other international treaty which bans the death penalty, the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and completed the journey to total abolition.

    From http://www.amnesty.org.uk/action/camp/dp/intro/uk.html

    So a few years out.

guilty as charged , but you can't hang me for it. :D

    :D

So is this for all crimes?
Taping something from the radio is technically a crime - I would be executed.

Or just 'deserving' crimes - but where / how do you draw the line?

I'm prepared to bet that everybody everywhere has committed a crime during their lifetime - even just really silly ones like a pedestrian walking in the road.
Your proposal would result in serious depopulation & just a touch of a police state...

Hah! Speak for yourself, you cassette-armed music-stealing thief. You´re no longer suited to be a part of society. Go and live with the badgers!

After all, you don't want a representative of P.E.T.A on your case. ;) :)

Did I write that all crimes should be punished with capital punishment? What I wrote was, that capital punishment should be available for all crimes. There's a huge difference!

I need to get this out before I go on. It is easy to understand the death penatly in the US constitution when you know about the framers. They were mostly Christians. God says that for things like rape, murder, killing you kid before its born, that you should be killed. The reasoning is that you are sent to hell where the real punisment is (that last part is my opinion). The constitution is based on biblical law, ergo, death penalty fits like a glove.

The death penalty as a deterrant....
The US doesn't execute nearly as many people a year as they lawfully SHOULD! Not all states even have it on the books, like Maine, which is stupid. We have lots of problems with sex offenders in America. How many dead people commit sex crimes. I bet most sex offenders deserved the death penalty, but for some reason that is beyond reasonor common sense, they were granted a minimal sentace to prision, which is also a horrid deterrant. Prisons are too nice. They get what ever they want. Prison should be like a British prision ship durring the American Revolution where half the POWs/ inmates died because the conditions were so horrid.

    I am with Dostoievski here:

"The degree of civilization of a society can be judged by entering it's prisons."

Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but where does the Bible say that rape, murder & abortion shouyld recieve the death penalty?
I always thought that a fair chunk of the Bible was devoted to forgiveness, and loving the sinner no matter what.

As to the death penalty as a deterrant - where has that worked?
We had the death penalty for many years, and we still had crime. We had appalling prisons, and we still had crime.

South Africa has a huge crime rate...
Didn't they design cars with mini-flame-throwers in the doors to deter people from nicking them?
