Clifton Sprague - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia He did everything right, and while many brave men gave thier lives that day, he saved many, many more.
Forgive my ignorance please. I remember now. Admiral Sprague would be a very deserving namesake for a new aircraft carrier.
I agree with you ships like aircraft carriers deserve a name that when seen imediatly gets people saying "Good name for a good ship" and sorry but regardless how great a politian you are (Churchill excluding) should not have a ship named after them!
Ok, that's a great name for one carrier. Now we need a name for one more since we have 2 being constructed.
Another good name would be USS Humphreys after Joshua Humphreys, the shipbuilder who designed the first frigates in the USN including Old Ironsides the USS Constitution.
How about the USS Andrew Jackson Higgens? We couldn't have done it without him. That's what Ike said, in paraphrase of course.
I suppose those names would be good for something, but we are trying to suggest the names of non-politicians for the carriers. Thanks for your input nontheless.
The Navy is being used more and more for 'humanitarian relief' than destroying the enemy. That said they should just donate all their ships to the Red Cross. Paint all of 'em white and put a big red corss on 'em. That is unless the Navy regains it's Reagan-era fighting spirit and actually sinks a pirate ship before the Indian navy does.
I read in my hometown paper today the the Japanese Navy has dispatched two destroyers to aid in the struggle against the pirates. I'm sure that a lot of the old-timers in Japan are hollering "Bonzai" down at the local saki bars now....
I'm a bit late to this thread, but I like this idea a lot. No person's name should be on a navy ship, especially a politician's name.
Russo, I'm not so sure about 'no persons' name, I mean I would see nothing wrong with naming a ship after say a founding father or another person who is recognised as a hero. Great military leaders may be appropriate too in the case of smaller ships. That said, 'U.S.S. Bush' is a bit controversial.
I agree with you Stefan, but we haven't had any great politicians in quite some time here, at least worthy enough to be a namesake of an aircraft carrier. A garbage scowl, maybe, but the most powerful vessel afloat, NOPE!!!! The USS George Washington and the USS Abraham Lincoln were nuclear subs I believe, and I think that JFK was too, so there are several well known and deserving names that have already been used in recent times. It wouldn't take much effort to come up with deserving namesakes. The problem is with the self-serving politicians and their penchant for naming things after themselves these days have gotten out of hand.
I thought about that after I posted. I would make exception for names like Washington, Lincoln, and a select few others. NO living person should be so honored.
Irusso, I second that notion. It is the predominant position those interested in this thread, that no ships should be named after living persons, and politicians in general. Especially recent politicians, who did nothing for anyone except themselves anyway.
I agree. I thought that like us, you guys re-used the names of warships? Rather a nice tradition, provides something of a continuation with forebears I thought, much like our regimental system. Still, there are plenty of great Americans for you to choose from, the Ben Franklin, Daniel Boon, Patrick Henry, John Paul Jones to name a couple who could have at least a small ship named after them.
Several names have been re-used for some ships. For example, the USN has had a USS Enterprise since WW2 at least, and the USS Ranger was a recycled name too. Both those names were ship's names from the Revolutionary War, and possibly the War of 1812 too. Names of cities and states are now being used for submarines. There are more out there, but those are the only ones that I can come up with right away.
