I've only just discovered that this podcast interview I did on female spies back in 2016 is on You Tube. The conversation starts at about a minute in. As Nancy Wake said: “I hate wars and violence but if they come then I don’t see why we women should just wave a proud goodbye and then knit them balaclavas.”
....I would think ''some'' females [ back then? ] wanted adventure/something different in life/etc like males did ....
Nacy Wake was the aunt of a family friend of ours. She was a kiwi who settled in Australia. Toward the end of her life there she would prop up the bar in some RSL club and tell old soldier stories than no one believed - but were true. She was "rediscovered" and honoured. IRRC she died in Britain in a veterans hospital.
