Maybe there should be a place for Rogues who make such comments to the seekers, after all it was futballman's first post, and he came to us for help. Yes it was rude and crude, and totally out of line with the mission here, which is to teach and learn I thought, in addition to sharing our passion for advanced WW2 studies with each other. We must keep in mind that everyone who comes here is not as versed in WW2ology as the rest of us. Maybe the forum creators could initiate a temporary place for those who can't play and work with others, not as bad a place as the cooler, but maybe something like "KP," or "latrine duty." Just an idea. I know this thread is old, and I don't think that futballman has returned. That is not good.

Sorry about that. I'm still learning too. Gotta go, time for some KP and then latrine duty now.

A-58, I really don't understand why you gave yourself the trouble of digging up an old thread for this. If you read the posts previous to mine you would have understood that this was an unexperienced and rather ignorant member (to use a polite expression) writing very rudely to another newcomer. I felt entirely justified in browbeating the offender and would do it again today if I felt that was necessary.

To wit, what Kingthreehead wrote to Fuballman was:
I found this entirely unacceptable coming from a guy who had just joined the forum, and if he was a veteran this behaviour would have been unacceptable as well, but it certainly took nerve for a rookie to crow like that. He had been here for days only, who the heck had given him the right to be rude?

So if Futballman hasn't retrurned you can lay the responsibility on KTH for being an idiotic bully, certainly not on me for speaking against KTH (who thankfully hasn't been seen here since August last year, go figure why he left after three months only  )

I am very much in agreement with your sentiment. I didn't clearly state my position, or was in error when I quoted your post in mine. The wrath was directed not at you, but at KTH. I spend a lot of time reading other and older posts, and when I read the rude post by KTH to futballman, well it sort of torqued me up. Even though it was an old post, I felt that I had to defend the rookie. I checked, and saw that futballman hasn't returned, maybe he found all the information he needed for his project, or was totally put off by getting "flamed" by KTH and never came back. I am on your side on this one, and I apologize publically for not clearly posting. Back to KP and latrine duty I guess....

All right, you can come out of the doghouse :) But really if the guy had not been seen in months there was no need to go berserk on him. If he were a currently active member I'd hold your coat ;)

The best thing is to check the date of his latest post to see if it's worth it or not.

    Cheers!

You don't worry about latrine or KP duty.

If you have done something that is out of line, trust me, you'll hear from me or one of the other moderators. If there is not a red dot on your forehead, then you're good to go.

    Carry on!

Whoa, I kind of got caught up in the moment there, just like Mayor Ray Nagin and his "Chocolate City" speech on MLK Day after Katrina in New Orleans. Thanks for the slap back to reality Urqh. I needed that.... Where's my beer?

The actual number of civilian soldiers numbered over 28 million men and those who could not have rifles were given swords, knifes, rakes, hoes or were going to use their bare hands to fight back.

It was unnecessary but I would gladly nuke them if I was in Trueman's position. The Axis gave no quarters, none should be given. Killing the enmy to save your own has complete justification.

Whatever the number of people actually enrolled in the Patriotic Citizens Fighting Corps, they were most decidedly NOT civilians, or even "civilian soldiers". Under the definitions of the Geneva Conference regarding the rules of land warfare, they were combatants subject to military discipline and under the control of military officers for the purpose of rendering military service. In actual fact, there were very few true civilians left in Japan after May, 1945.

Furthermore, these conscripts, both male and female, were to be armed, albeit mostly with primitive weapons, and receive training in combat tactics. Japan, which had never agreed to, or ratified, the Geneva Convention, was planning to send these people into the fighting without any identifying uniform or emblem, which was also against the Geneva rules of land warfare. This would have ensured that citizens who actually were civilians, would also be killed by the GI's who would have no way of distinguishing between members of the Patriotic Citizens Fighting Corps and ordinary civilians.

Yes, I agree The atomic bombing was unnecessary, but only if one is willing to accept the horrific number of casualties, Japanese, American, and others, attendant upon the alternatives. These casualties would have been several orders of magnitude higher than those incurred in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
