Panther hands down, best combination of firepower, mobility and armour of the war.

T-34, great tank, but second choice.

Tiger II? save your money, build pillboxes, either way I'm taking my Panthers around your flanks.

I've always had a soft spot for the sherman just because I grew up reading "the haunted tank" in the comic book "GI Combat". Anyone remember that? Well, because of the comic, the sherman was the first model tank I ever made. I unsuccessfully tried to create the haunted tank itself. I won't say it was too great, but still my favorite. Besides, you had to be awfully brave to ride that in against all of those great German tanks!!!!

    Very nice pics!

As much as I bash the Sherman, it was quite a versatile vehicle.

Doc--I also grew up reading about the Haunted Tank. Lieutenant J.E.B. Stuart and the rest of his crew. But, when I started reading G.I.Combat was when JEB and his crew were riding in a Stuart/Lee tank mounting I think a 37mm main gun. These were the good old days when my favorite war comic artist--Russ Heath--was pencilling and inking his own artwork. I think Joe Kubert was doing some of the covers. I still have most of my G.I. Combat and Sgt. Rock books. :D

If the Churchill was "very bad" how was it possible that my Regiment got the better of both the Tiger and Panther in North Africa and Italy?

Any tank is only as good as its crew...

Certainly the Allied tanks suffered against the German armour but numbers will overcome quality in the end. The Churchill was a very survivable tank and when armed with a 6pdr a force to be reckoned with. It remains one of the underated tanks of the war. As do most allied vehicles due to the persisting popularity of German Armour. Most people do dismiss Allied vehicles and fall into the stereotypical arguement that all allied vehicles were very poor. This is not true. Although not as advanced as german designs they were still highly good designs, the Sherman is still in service today although upgunned and changed but it proves that perhaps the design is more worthy than we think. Ask the Isreali's what they think of their Super-Shermans...

My favourite tank of the war remains the Tiger I. It seems to sum up the Germans for me and has an overpowering image attached to it. If you havent see on in the flesh so to speak, its awe inspiring!

Oh and matildas aint bad!!! The Germans had nothing that could stop them in the early days and they caused panic at Arras till some 88's were found to fire at them. One matilda withstood 36 direct hits without penetration, including repeated 88 hits... Now that cant be a bad tank to be in in 1940?

had to pick the IS-2. German tanks were advanced for their time many of the features are still with us today, though admittedly they did steal some from the soviets. the problem with german tanks was their unreliability. they had a tendency to break up all the time. for example at the battle of villiers bocage micheal wittmann's tank broke down and he had to transfer to another vehicle, this is why we have problems identifiying his vehicle in the battle. this problem was never solved by the germans and remained their bug bear till the end of the war. the IS-2 was big had a great gun which could destroy german tank and battle range and was reliable. it also had a great deal of survivability. its only problem was it lack of storage for ammunition.

Indeed I wonder that Tiger I and Tiger II are so dominant in this poll.

Tiger I - ok, but Tiger II was rather crap. Maybe it has a good reputation in allied military history, because it sometimes had awesome performance destroying Shermans. But so many of them had to be left alone by their crew, because it sank into the ground.

All in all, I think the Panther is best: Similar firepower and armor as the Tiger, but much faster and much cheaper.

From economical points of view, the Russian tanks were better (T-34/85, IS-2)

Posing the question surely requires a qualifier.
Favourite tank of whom? Modeller, War-gamer, Historian, Debator, or (most importantly) the Crews who manned them?

    Favourite or best?

Since my favourite aircraft were the Defiant, Battle and Hudson....

My favourite tank has to be the old Char B.

Don't think the Maus got out of the prototype stage in time for action.
Saw video footage of an M-26 Pershing in battle against a Panther. Pretty neat.
How about a tank destroyer? M-18 Hellcat?

Vote on Tiger I doesn't suprise me, but I think the Panther was a better rounded tank.

To ask the question "What is the best tank?" is almost like asking "Who was the best German general?"

To which the reply is, "Best at what?"

But, yes, I think Panther is the best all round tank, after it had repaired its techinal flows. I heard they catched fire in Kursk.
